Description:
New York: Scribner, 1999. First Editions. The second book in a three-book deal made with Scribner's, involving a series of "interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War" (from front flap). From the library of novelist and Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman (1931-2018), best known for his 1973 novel The Princess Bride. His relationship to King dates back to the mid-1980's, when he adapted King's novel Misery for both the screen and stage. He would go on to write the screenplays for Hearts In Atlantis and Dreamcatcher, clearly drawn to King's work. King, likewise, was a mutual admirer, and while we have handled a good many volumes inscribed by King, we have seldom encountered any in which he is this fannish and effusive. An extraordinary pair of books, reflecting King's gratitude to the recipient, and Goldman's extensive interaction with the text. Brooks A70.1. First… Read more

Description:
Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1978. I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke." "There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book" (Fiona Webster). It was the basis for the 1994 American television miniseries. King also wrote the teleplay and had a minor role in the… Read more

Description:
West Kingston, RI: Donald M. Grant, 1984. Second Edition. The Gunslinger begins the quest by Roland, the gunslinger, to track and confront the "man in black," who knows, perhaps, the secret of the "Dark Tower." As he travels across the barren landscape of King's alternate world, sometimes alone, sometimes with a boy named Jake, Roland recalls fragments of his own past. He finally confronts the man in black, who reads his future with a Tarot deck" (Barron, Horror Literature: A Reader's Guide 4-164). Among King's most widely-read works, successfully merging elements of the spaghetti western and epic fantasy. Basis for Nikolaj Arcel's 2017 film adaptation (The Dark Tower), starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. An association copy of the highest caliber. To the casual reader, the connection between King and John D. MacDonald (1916-1986) may not be immediately apparent, but despite a 31 year age difference, there was a strong friendship between the two men, and depth of mutual admiration. Prior… Read more

Description:
New York: Doubleday, 1974. Stephen King has been read by more people than any living author, and more than most dead ones. As Don Heron commented in "The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural," King specializes in "contemporary American scenes, everyday parents and kids and teenagers, vulgarly realistic language - a believable setting awaiting the coming of terror." He has become the most popular horror writer of all time. Several adaptations of Carrie have been released, including a 1976 feature film, a 1988 Broadway musical, a 1999 feature film sequel, a 2002 television movie, and a 2013 feature film remake.
