The Hague, Holland: Isaacum Vander Kloot, 1732. Hardcover. copper plate frontispiece. pp. 1322, 46. Very thick 8vo. Title page printed in red and black with vignette. This volume is bound in contemporary mottled calf with gilt decorated spine and boards. Rear hinge is weak but still intact. Front hinge cracked: now close to detaching from text block. Overall, the binding is scuffed and rubbed. Marbled endpapers with old armorial bookplate on front pastedown, the bookplate being that of the Rev. Jasper Hume Nicolls (1818-1877) who, in 1845, was appointed the first Principal of Bishop's College (now Bishop's University) in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Contents clean, with slight age-darkening and a few early marginal notations. It would be a simple matter for a competent bookbinder to strengthen the joints and repair the hinges, while retaining the original binding. Terence (died 159 BC?) was a Roman writer of comedy. Venetiis [Venice]: Apud Thomam Bettinelli, 1790. 2 vols., 8vo, pp. [ii], 416; [ii], 324 + frontispiece in vol. 1. Title-pages engraved. Modern marbled boards, black leather spine labels, edges retaining earlier gilt. A bit of minor spotting. Gift inscription to retained binder's blank at front of vol. 2, dated 1807. An elegantly printed edition of Terence, reproducing the text of the 1726 Westerhovius edition. This copy was given to one William Wybergh by Matthew Raine, the headmaster of Charterhouse School, after Wybergh's graduation from that institution. Wybergh (b. 1787, at Charterhouse 1803-1806) was a member of an ancient Cumbrian family; he inherited Clifton Hall in Westmoreland, which had passed through unbroken male descent in the Wybergh family since the time of Edward III.

Collates: Engraved Title, A2-C2 [ie: 48pp], 323, 9. A scarce item of one of the seminal works of Dutch scholarship, in Latin.

Plays in Latin language with German language commentary. Front gutter cracked but still holding. Soiling to the boards. Terrence (190 B.C. - 159 B.C.) was a North African slave of a Roman senator, Terentius Lucanus. He was the author of 6 major palys. His style deviated from earlier dramatic form. He avoided monologues, favoring dialogue that was more like ordinary conversation, devoid of flamboyance. His prologues were essays in literary crticism, and he was deeply concerned with unity in the plot, sometimes incorporating passages from other plays. He moved drama in the direction of realism and was influential on the writings of Cicero, Horace, and the early Christian Church fathers.
