This 2 volume leather bound used set is in good condition. The pages are clean and crisp. The gold guilt is worn on the lower edges of the pages for both volumes. The binding is tight. The boards are clean inside and out. The spine is neat.

Owner's names, location, and date on front endpaper of both volumes. Brick colored cloth is just slightly sunned on the spine; both books tight and square with unbroken hinges. The slipcase is still holding together, but a couple of the seams are partially split. From the title page: "The translation from the Russian by Louise & Aylmer Maude revised by Mr. & Mrs. Maude with a special Introduction by them; illustrated with reproductions of the famous nineteenth century paintings by Vassily Verestchagin, and numerous pen drawings made for this edition by Fritz Eichenberg. Book is fine and unmarked, with bright, unchipped spine title. The tan slipcase is very good, clean and tight, with no chips and with only minor rubbing to small areas of the entry square. A splendid copy.

Books owned by Henry Moore of this period are rare in commerce. The late 1920's were very important formative years and in 1928 saw Moore's first solo exhibition, held at the Warren Gallery in London. On 19 July 1929, Moore married Irina Radetsky, a painting student at the Royal College. Volume II is the Fourth Edition published in 1888 at Catherine Street, The Strand. 12.3 x 19cm brown decorative paper covered boards, all rebacked with original spines laid down. Yellow coated endpapers; Volume I vii[i] 429[1]pp, Volume II 360pp; Volume III 387[1] The delicate bindings are in a much better state than is usually found with most of the spines having been preserved. There is some rubbing to the edges and the War and Peace title on the spines is very faded but the titles of each individual volume on the front covers is clear and bright. The binding is firm.
