Description:
Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1874. Reprint. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. Hoppin; Stephens; Williams; White; et al. Early printing of BAL 3357. Only one imprint on title page. Includes fold-out with several Japanese tissue repairs on reverse. Rebacked with original backstrip laid down, boards rubbed. 1874 Hard Cover. xvi, [17]-574, [2] pp. 8vo. First published in 1873, The Gilded Age is both a biting satire and a revealing portrait of post-Civil War America -- an age of corruption when crooked land speculators, ruthless bankers, and dishonest politicians voraciously took advantage of the nation's peacetime optimism. With his characteristic wit and perception, Mark Twain and his collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, attack the greed, lust, and naivete of their own time in a work which endures as a valuable social document and one of America's most important satirical novels.

Description:
Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company , 1882. Title page states "Sold By Subscription Only". 576pp/illus. The Gilded Age was Twains first novel and was co-authored by his neighbour and fellow author, Charles Dudley Warner. It tells the epic story of Colonel Sellers and the Hawkings family in their relentless and convoluted pursuit of wealth, and their very American concept of wealth as a worthy end in itself. Wealth eluded them, often with tragic results, and the title of the novel became the name of the era it describes. Early printing. First published in 1873, this is a very attractive example of the books original design and format. Gift inscription inside front cover. Clean. Cloth. Very Good+/No Jacket Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
