Boston: Gray and Bowen, 1831. 1831 First Edition. Very Good-. Internally near fine. Pages, all edges gilt, are clean and unmarked; slight to light foxing excepting final leaves which are more heavily foxed; a few scattered spottings; no tears or chips. Light blue endpapers. Affixed to the front pasted end is the custom bookplate of G. H. Carroll (it may have replaced an older bookplate as some residue of old paste extends beyond the plate.) Red leather cover is elaborately tooled with gilt and blind embossing on front and rear boards. Spine is titled and decorated in gilt. Cover is overall good, leather on boards only lightly worn. Gilt on boards is bright though gilt on spine has dulled and spine leather darkened and worn. Cover edges rubbed, the spine and hinges scuffed, corner tips and spine ends worn; chipping at top of spine. Binding and hinges are firm, intact and straight.
