This method will justify itself to the read who seeks to form his own opinion from a number of similar authentic accounts" - from the Preface. Book about Woodrow Wilson. Locale: Greece; Turkey. Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed U.S. first edition, first printing, of the fifth and penultimate volume of Winston Churchill's monumental history of The First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. Then, being Churchill, he wrote about it. The World Crisis was originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931, with the first four volumes spanning the war years 1911-1918 and the final two volumes covering the postwar years 1918-1928 (The Aftermath) and the Eastern theatre (The Eastern Front). Unusual among ChurchillÂ’s many published books, the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis initially preceded the British, making the U.S. the true first edition. The Aftermath addresses some of the complications and disappointments of peace following the Armistice that… Read More

Description:
Toronto: The Macmillan Company of Canada, Ltd.,, 1923-31. The bibliographer's set, in jackets First Canadian editions, first printings, of Churchill's mammoth history of the First World War, preserving the dust jackets of volumes III to VI. This set is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. The Canadian editions were issued from sheets of the US editions, published earlier the same years. The US editions preceded the British; Cohen does not determine the publication dates of the Canadian editions. Langworth writes of both the UK and US editions that "jacketed sets are extremely rare" (pp. 105 & 108), but "Canadian jacketed World Crisis volumes are even scarcer than the British or American... I have never found a complete set for sale and most collectors who are building sets are doing so one volume at a time" (ibid., p. 109). Cohen records in his bibliography that he had not seen a jacket for volumes I and II. Volume III is a review copy, with the publisher's presentation… Read More

The bibliographer's set, in jackets First editions, first printings, of Churchill's mammoth history of the First World War, preserving the dust jackets - "jacketed sets are extremely rare" (Langworth, p. 105). These US editions are the true firsts, published slightly prior to the British. This set is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. The work deals with his reorganization of the Royal Navy in the years leading up to the war, defends his Gallipoli policy, and criticizes Haig's strategy. "Although parts of The World Crisis were highly autobiographical, drawing on documents from Churchill's private papers, the book as a whole was a stupendous narrative of the war in Europe featuring masterly set-piece accounts of major battles. Dictated to secretaries as he strode up and down the room, it exhibited his passionate interest in war and his romantic conception of the 'true glory' of the troops who perished on the Somme" (ODNB).… Read More
