Leather labels in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Wistar's Anatomy" and in fourth compartment with volume number. Errata for volumes 1 and 2 on one page following text. Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) taught anatomy, midwifery, and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania from 1789 to his death in 1818. He published A System of Anatomy in two volumes in 1811 and 1814. He served as president of both the American Philosophical Society and the Society for the Abolition of Slavery. In Very Good- Condition: leather is slightly rubbed; front board just starting at tail; minor loss at head of spine; 10-cm. tear in folded plate, without loss; light soiling throughout; a few pages browning.

Illustrated with pull-out chart on page 288 of Volume 2. Pieces of ephemera about the author laid-in. Full bound in its original calf. The leather has been treated with a conditioner by a professional bookbinder to restore and preserve them for years to come. The books are in good antiquarian condition. Boards show slight fading and wear to spines, and minor shelf wear to edges. Text blocks age toned, with foxing and age toning to pages throughout. All volumes paginated continuously as issued, with the addition of numbered pages alternate with blank leaves for note-taking. Several note-taking pages used or partially used, with some scattered marginal notes on printed text pages. Leather is well rubbed and has peeling in places, corners rounded, chipping to the haed and foot spine edges; front board of Vol. I is quite loose but still attached. Ownership sig, dated 1815 in pencil on front free endpaper of Vol. I and in ink along top of the title page; own. sig. and date of 1815 in ink on title page of Vol. II. Upper corners torn from margins of 7 leaves in Vol. II, not affecting the text. The first American textbook on the subject of anatomy, a classic in its field that went to several editions in the first half of the 19th century.
