London: A. Millar, 1753. 1/4 leather. Very Good. The uncommon 1753 1st edition of this early, cautionary treatise on opium, by the Edinburgh surgeon and physician George Young, M.D. (1692-1757). A solid, very presentable copy. Handsomely re-bound in a late 20th century dark-blue morocco over dark-green cloth. Bright gilt-titling, raised bands along the spine, crisp new endsheets. The original text itself is relatively clean and sharp, and eminently readable (particularly considering its 270 years). Light, intermittent foxing throughout, several small, harmless markings in the margins. 12mo, 182 pgs. plus the publisher's (A. Millar's) advertisements at the rear. "'A Treatise on Opium' was published in 1753 as a response to an important paper on opium published in 1742 by Young's Edinburgh contemporary Charles Alston (1683-1760), professor of botany and materia medica.
