Woodcut frontispiece with death & a necromancer holding the mirror, below is a Dutch city + 22 half page woodcuts + each of 4 titlepages has a different figural woodcut + a few nice head- & tail-pieces and a nice initial capital.. Small octavo laced through full vellum, spine titled in ink (1" splits to foot of spine). Four Parts in one Volume. Frontis + printed titlepage + prelims all unnumbered but within the pagination 144pp; titlepage within pagination 112pp; [8]pp pictorial titlepage +contents +56pp; titlepage with poem on back +206pp. The woodcuts are charmingly primitive scenes of love, duels & murder and at least 5 of them have the figure of Death coming for the protagonist as in the earlier dances of death. Partly in verse, partly in dialogue and part in biblical texts the printer has used black letter, italic and ordinary typefaces, in double column, single column, double and single spacing and various sizes of type. Amsterdam, Joannes Kannewet, [1763], 8vo., full parchment spitsel binding, 246+[4]+52+206 pp., on the outside the parchment binding is in good condition, on the inside there is considerable damage: the hinges are broken and restoration tape has been used to keep a number of pages in place, in the front as well as in the back. Furthermore, the titlepages have damaged corners (reinforced with restoration tape), the bookblock has been cut too close to the printwork creating a very small margin and sometimes loss of letters, woodcut titlepage preceding the typographical titlepage, printer's mark on typographical titlepage (woodcut), woodcut tailpieces, woodcut illustrations throughout the book (one illustration - depicting a mermaid's tail - turns up twice). Each title has it's own titlepage with woodcut illustration.

(8), 252, (60)pp. The first edition of a popular and much reprinted book of moral tales about violence. 15 engravings in the first work, 3 in the second (and a vignette on the title) and an extra engraved title to Gulden-Spiegel. As here, it was often paired with Mayvogel's life of Amnon (apparently present here in the second edition, first published in 1646).
