Vilna [Vilnius, Lithuania]: Rom - Bi-defus ha-almanah yehe-ahim Rom. Good. 1890. Hardcover. 2 vols. pages; Contemporary half pebbled dark brown morocco over black cloth. Considerable wear and rubbing to the corners, both backstrips now lost. Two volume edition of Isaac Aboab's Menorat ha-Maor, the great household book of medieval Jews. This two volume edition also has the commentary and Yiddish version of Moses Frankfurter [1672-1762] -- Nefesh Yehudah. The volumes were printed in Vilnius, Lithuania -- a major Jewish center at the time of publication. There are title pages in Hebrew and Russian (both detached and worn in the margins), followed by title pages entirely in Hebrew. 324; 328 pp. (After the Holocaust, Vilnius has a Jewish population of about half of one percent; books like this one certainly suffered a similar catastrophic decline in fortune). The provenance of our set is interesting. Leopold Strouse, the Baltimore philanthropist gave these volumes to Johns…

Paris: A la Librairie orientaliste de Ve Dondey-Dupré. Very Good. 1836. Hardcover. xlii , (2) , 324 pages; Contents clean and secure in a contemporary binding of quarter leather and marbled boards, five raised bands and gilt lettering at spine, marbled endpapers. Leather rubbed at extremitiesfirst blank after marbled endpapers detached. Fascinating and thorough history of the Saracens in France by noted medievalist Joseph Toussaint Reinaud. The Saracens (the Arabs, Berbers, Moors and Turks) invaded France at various times from the beginning of the 8th century and occupied the country for a century. Charles Martel defeated the Saracens at Poitiers in 732, driving them to Provence in southeastern France. They were defeated in several battles there, but retained control of part of the Massif des Maures. They built a fortress on the heights overlooking the current village of la Garde-Freinet, about 20 km northwest of St Tropez. From their fortress, the Saracens raided the surrounding…

Louvain: Institut Supérieur de Philosophie de l'Université. Good. 1913. First Edition Thus. Printed Wrappers. Les Philosophes Belges - Textes et Etudes (Vol VIII); vii, (1), 74, 175 pages; Contents clean and complete, housed in modern patterned portfolio with original rear wrapper and most of backstrip, lacks front wrapper. OCLC 949046469 Gaston Wallebrand (1884-1941) is one of the pioneers in the study of medieval linguistic theory. His edition of Siger de Courtrai's grammatical and logical writings was the first modern edition with a substantial introduction to the medieval linguistic text belonging to the so-called Modistic tradition. Wallerand succeeded in giving a remarkably informed exposition of the development of medieval grammar. Siger de Courtrai (Latin Sigerus de Cortraco , Flemish Zeger van Kortrijk ) was a grammarian and philosopher of language from the Modistes school. He was born in Kortrijk around 1283 and died in Paris in 1341. He made his…

Zürich: Meyer und Zeller. Very Good. 1858. Hardcover. 2 p.l., 203 & [1, errata] pages; Contemporary pattern-printed paper-covered boards, flat spine ruled in gilt, red titling slip lettered in gilt. Probably a publisher's binding. This is one of the early modern editions of "Orendel" -- a Middle High German poem, traditionally called a "Spielmannsdichtung." The first 103 pages contain the edition of the poem in the Middle High German original with numbered stanzas, and the final 100 pages consist of the introduction and notes by the editor Ludwig Ettmüller. This introduction cites the oldest manuscript of this poem, (Orendel is thought to date from the 12th century) known to the editor, which he states was written on paper in 1477 (small folio, on 64 leaves); in Ettmüller's time, this manuscript was in the Stadbibliothek in Strassburg. Today, alas, it is considered to be lost. Ettmüller also mentions a printed edition from Augsburg…
