Description:
London: Folio Society, 1992. Hardback. Fine/Slipcase in good condition. John Aubrey (edited by Richard Barber). Folio Society, London, 1992 (seventh printing). Book condition: near fine and has an unread feel. Very clean and sound. Original slipcase in very good condition with a little light scuffing here and there. Brief Lives is one of the strangest books - if indeed this collection of notes, excerpts, gossip and dry facts can be called a book - to have achieved literary fame. Aubrey himself was equally strange in his way: a gentleman with a learned turn of mind, yet little formal education, a lover of books and manuscripts, yet almost penniless, a would-be scholar who loved wprldly company as much as that of serious men, who spent the last twenty years of his life living in other people's houses, on the run from his creditors. The text in this edition has been modernised in spelling and Aubrey's abbreviations have been expanded. A fascinating and intriguing read.
