Description:
Bremen: self-published, 1973. A4 (30.5 × 21.5 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; offset-printed and xeroxed text, photographs, and drawings on loosely inserted sheets; 10 pp. Very good. Single issue of this uncommonly seen German underground journal, inspired by the "Agit 883" periodical published in Berlin from 1969 to 1972. It was intended as a broad forum for a left opposition in Germany, and evolved from an initial interest in Marxism into an anarchist-inspired publication. After the journal published the first public pro-RAF statement in 1970, it was indexed and the publishers were subject to prosecution and police searches, which ultimately led to the end of the project in 1972. The present periodical began with a page in the original Agit 883 dedicated to Bremen, and began to appear as an independent journal two months after the last issue of Agit 883 appeared. An editorial proclaims "Long live the myth of 883, which has risen again!" Like its namesake, the journal sought to "bolster the…

Various: 1965-1966. 52.5 x 35 cm. Original printed self-wrappers; first three issues are a single page, fourth is a special eight-page issue. Very good to fine condition. A rare complete set in four issues of the journal published in conjunction with four different exhibitions by Constant Nieuwenhuys, known as Constant (1920-2005). Constant was a Dutch painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and musician. He was affiliated with the avant-garde movement CoBrA and with the Situationist International before beginning what he called his "New Babylon" project. The New Babylon project lasted from 1956 to 1974, and was characterized by Constant's shift to focus primarily on architecture and the urban environment. He envisioned a "world wide city for the future" with collectively-owned land and automated labor leading to more freedom for creativity. This project consisted of models, spacial constructions, maquettes, collages, drawings, and text which all worked together to convey Constant's theories. The project…

Cologne: Buero Olympia/Lidl Sport, 1970. Quarto (29.5 x 21 cm). Original illustrated wrappers; unpaginated (40 pp.), profusely illustrated throughout. Overall very good condition. The first and only issue of the magazine which dealt with the actions of the LIDL group during the 1970 German contemporary art exhibition, "Jetzt: Künste in Deutschland heute." According to articles about one of its members, German Neo-Expressionist painter and sculptor Jörg Immendorff, "LIDL ridiculed elitist art traditions, the cult of creative 'genius', and the precious aesthetic object. The artist countered these hierarchies by assembling a body of pretentious iconograpic motifs drawn from the make-believe world of the child - turtles, dogs, goldfish, playhouses, and polar bears - which he transformed into the 'working material' of what he hoped would be a new functional art form." (Pamela Kort, 1991) DADA-like in theory, LIDL never became an established group but consisted of a variety of artists, including James Lee…

Groh (b. 1936) is a German artist and author who helped bring Mail Art from America to Europe and established an international Mail Art network. A rare complete collection in five fascicules of the Surrealist magazine under the editorial direction of French poet Michel Fardoulis-Lagrange. Cofounded with Jean Maquet, and with the collaboration of René de Solier and Raoul Ubac, five total issues were published. He and Maquet chose the title after a famous line from André Breton, and meant to signify not a complete departure from Surrealism, but a slight shift in direction and approach. The issues contain brief works of prose and poetry with…
