An alphabet book by the Polish Nobel Prize laureate in literature comprises sketches and short essays on persons real and imagined, places (e.g. France, or Connecticut River Valley), concepts and emotions (curiosity, economy, fame), objects (gold, manors) - to mention only a few. The sketches include pithy biographies of many eastern European figures not well known in the West. Translated from Polish by Madeline G. Levine. Large 12mo (5-3/4" x 7-3/4"), beige paper over boards with brown quarter and multi-colored gilt lettering, practically no visible wear, but faint foxing/dust soil to edges.
