In worn DJ with creases, rubbing, chips and tears. Pencil note on ffep by former owner Prof. Ann E. Berthoff recording whom the book was a gift from; her marginalia in pencil observed on two other pages.

The Book of Insects by artist Utamaro (1753-1806) is reproduced on 15 "double" color plates - one image across facing pages; the paintings incorporate poems, which are translated in a notes section at the end alongside small b&w reproductions of the same paintings. Pages unnumbered. The book, 7-3/4" x 10", maroon cloth, is produced in accordion format, open on both side edges, allowing easy fold-out of the plates. Minute soil spots to the front board and its paper label, which also has one tan stain, a touch of soil to the edges, corners sharp, no marks within. The slipcover has edge-wear and soil, particularly a coffee stain to the label on the front.

The book was explanded from the Mellon Lectures delivered in Spring 1985 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Illustrated throughout with b&w photos and diagrams. Topics include the ancient Roman villa, Medici villas and those of Palladio, landscape gardens, Thomas Jefferson, and 19th and 20th century American villas. Imperial 8vo (8" x 10-1/2"), gray cloth with gilt lettering on spine, moss green end papers, minimal wear, two dark smudges on or near spine, faint dust soil to top edge.
