One of 5 000 copies printed. Rare in good condition.
The collection of feuilletons about labor in pre-revolutionary Russia and the new Soviet country was written by Mikhail Kol'tsov (born Moisey Fridlyand; 1898-1940/2), a journalist and a prominent figure in the Soviet intellectual elite, who also served as an NKVD agent. He played a pivotal role as the founder and editor of Ogonek, Chudak, Krokodil, and Sovetskoe Fotomagazines, and was a member of the editorial board of Pravda. Kol'tsov is renowned for being Stalin's chief reporter during the Spanish Civil War. Notably, Ernest Hemingway portrayed Kol'tsov as the character Karkov in his novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls."In 1938, Kol'tsov faced arrest, and he was subsequently executed either in 1940 or 1942. His name and works were banned and removed from Soviet literature during this period.

Description:
True first Russian edition of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.
When Doctor Zhivago was banned for printing in USSR, Boris Pasternak sold rights for the publication to Italian editor Feltrinelli. The further story is complicated and confusing. It was the cause of several monographs on the period of manuscript's travelling and the appearance of the first edition. Among them The washed Pasternak's novel by Ivan Tolstoy (Petersburg, Vremya, 2009, Russian edition) and Inside The Zhivago Storm by Paolo Mancosu (Milano: Feltrinelli, 2013).
The Central Intelligence Agency posted to its public website nearly hundred documents that clarified the CIA's role in publishing of this edition on April 2014.
According to these documents the CIA intervened because there was no Russian edition of the text that could serve as a formal obstacle to award the Nobel Prize to Pasternak.
Paolo Mancosu wrote about a stranger who came to Mouton with photostats of proofs of the typeset of this text in July, 1958. He ordered… Read More

Description:
There is first publication of Boris Kustodiev's illustrations to Gogol's stories Koliaska [The Carriage] and Shinel ' [The Overcoat]. These illustrations is called 'narrative' as they complete Gogol's text. The best Russian publishing house of that time, Expedition of making of state papers, ordered them to Kustodiev in 1905 , but unfortunately the edition never appeared in such quality.Kustodiev created series of drawings for each page after page with text and gave original interpretations. The scenes from provincial life to The Carriage show Kustodiev's irony. In his illustrations to The Overcoat he tried to follow text as close as possible.Next time illustrations were published in 1946 and 1949. Original drawings keep by The State Russian museum and by The Institution of Russian Literature. Boris Kustodiev studied in Art Academy by Il'ia Repin. He was a member of World of Arts movement. There are works of artists N. Geradov, A. Roman, D. Gavril'tsev to Maiskaia noch ' [May Night, or the Drowned… Read More

Extremely rare clandestine hectograph edition of Tolstoy's The Kreutzer Sonata. This is the first novella in Russian about the marriage and the relationships between sexes. After a long story of editing by the author initial text this eighth version (penultimate, finished in October 1889) has been rewritten by Tolstoy's daughter, Maria, and delivered to St. Petersburg. At the same time Tolstoy reminded renouncing the copyright to the novella so it was illegally copied in the Posrednik publishing house at one night, from October 29-th to 30-th 1889. 'Till Sunday 300 lithographed copies was ready... ' (Tolstoy. Polnoe sobranie sochineniy. T. 27. 1936). Description:
One of 5 000 copies printed.
First book edition.
Isaac Babel (1894-1940) was a renowned Russian-language short story writer, and his works were translated into numerous languages. One of his most notable works was the short story collection "The Odessa Tales," which served as the basis for the play "Sunset.""Sunset" made its debut at the Baku Worker's Theatre in 1927 and later had successful runs, including at the Moscow Art Theatre.Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein regarded the play's dramatic composition as the most suitable for the post-1917 era. Poet Boris Pasternak recommended that his father read it, noting, "Almost for the first time in my life, I found that Jewry, as an ethnic fact, was a phenomenon of positive, unproblematic importance and power" (from a letter to his father in 1928).Babel was arrested in 1939 and, under duress, confessed to being a spy. He was subsequently executed in January 1940.

First publication of a play Tri sestry [Three sisters] by A.P. Chekhov. It was written for the Moscow Art Theatre and performed there for the first time in the same year. The director Konstantin Stanislavsky, Chekhov's future wife Olga Knipper (for whom he wrote Masha's part) and Vsevolod Meyerhold acted in it.
Stanislavsky considered Three sisters as "the best" play by Chekhov.
Sergei Diaghilev, who was editing The Yearbook of the Imperial Theaters at that time, was scrambling for the right to be the first to publish the play. The revised text was published by A.F. Marx later on April.
