The photograph captures a group of men before a baigue, which is one of the oldest and widely practiced forms of horse racing among Turkic people. Baigue involves riding across rugged terrains for long distances (in the past, ranging from 5–15 km and sometimes exceeding 50 km), where the rider's tactical skill plays a crucial role. Its origin is rooted in the nomadic way of life and the need to train horses for long journeys. Today, baigue races are conducted at hippodromes.Based on the owner's mark, this particular photo was taken in South Kazakhstan in 1930s. It is important to highlight that between 1929 and 1931, Kazakhstan witnessed more than 370 uprisings against the Soviet policy of enforced collectivization and the consequent dismantling of the traditional nomadic lifestyle. These uprisings were met with brutal suppression by the authorities.

The collection of verses was created by a poet Vladimir Lugovskoy (1901-1957) in 1930, after his trip to Turkmenia (Turkmen SSR, Central Asia). The Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic was established in 1924. The Bolshevik's policy sparked a rebellion in Turkmenistan, and in 1927 the Soviets lost control of the republic. Only in 1932 the main instigators were executed. During the forced policy of collectivization, traces of the nomadic lifestyle were destroyed, and the traditional Turkmen way of life changed.

This collection of photos includes depictions of views from Khiva, the capital of the Khanate of Khiva, and the palaces of the Khiva khans, including the alley near Nurullaboy Palace and the pool. Additionally, the collection features images with the traces of what might have been a prison, possibly for women along with their graves, the local people crossing the Shavat canal, musicians at a party, and various other scenes portraying the everyday life of the local population.At least one of these photos - the wedding palanquin from Yomud nomads in Turkmenistan - was captured by Khudaibergen Devanov (Hudaibergen Divonov; 1879-1940), a pioneering Uzbek photographer, cinematographer, filmmaker, and cameraman. He is highly regarded as a prominent cultural figure in his hometown of Khiva, responsible for documenting his city and its individuals through photography. Probably, it was first published in Russian in 1974.The first story, Good Old Granddad Beknur, follows a young man on a journey across the vast steppe. Along the way, he stops at a solitary yurt and encounters an old shepherd whom he remembers from his childhood. The story concludes with the poignant realization that there is nothing more precious to a person than their homeland and the countryside.In the second story, The Little Jockey, we delve into the protagonist's childhood. Most likely, these photographs were taken by Yevgeny Pavlovsky (1884-1965), a prominent zoologist, entomologist, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). He is renowned for orchestrating numerous expeditions to Central Asia, the Transcaucasus, Crimea, and the Russian Far East, all with the purpose of studying endemic parasitic and transmissible diseases. Notably, in 1928, he journeyed to Tajikistan to combat local outbreaks of smallpox, tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid, and other infectious diseases.The photographs capture the lives of local people. Of particular interest is the image showing a man on a specialized bed designed to protect against fleas as part of efforts against typhoid.
