Description:
First edition. The only edition with these illustrations. The verses were designed by two book artists: Felix-Lev Zbarsky (1931-2016) and Mark Klyachko (1924-2000). Zbarsky studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute and became famous when he designed Yury Olesha's Selected works and Yves Montand's Memoirs in 1956. Sergei Dovlatov wrote that the Khrushchev Thaw for him began with the drawings of Zbarsky. The artist also worked at the animation studio as a production designer. In 1972 the artist emigrated to Israel and later to the USA. Klyachko studied at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow. He is best known for the illustrations to the Russian edition of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea (1974). The book design was criticized for the avant-garde style. So it was one of the reasons for reorganization of the publishing house. The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. In 1962…

Description:
This book consists of three fairy tales. The first one is about kids who got lost in the forest and asked wild animals how to find a forester house. The second one tells about a kite that quarreled with birds. The third is devoted to a caterpillar which became a butterfly. These stories were illustrated by May Miturich (Miturich-Khlebnikov, 1925–2008), an artist, nephew of futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov and son of avant-garde artist Vera Khlebnikova. He studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, where later he taught. In 2005 Mirutich was awarded the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. The book is from the children's collection of Inna Shmeleva (1929-2020), an artist, who studied under Ely Bielutin, the founder of The New Reality artistic academy. In 1962 Shmeleva participated in the 30th anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artist at the Central Exhibition Hall (Manège) which was severely criticized by Nikita Khrushchev. Description:
First edition of this translation and these illustrations. First Carême's Russian book. This poem, written by Maurice Carême (1899-1978), a Belgian francophone poet, made its debut in 1947. The translation work was undertaken by Mikhail Kudinov (1922-1994). In 1948, during his tenure as a student at the philology faculty of Moscow State University, he was accused for engaging in anti-Soviet activities, leading to his incarceration in a camp. After his release in 1954, Kudinov resumed his studies and went on to establish himself as a significant translator of works by renowned figures such as Arthur Rimbaud and Guillaume Apollinaire, as well as various other classical and contemporary French poets. The book's design was created by the distinguished children's book illustrator, Fyodor Lemkul (1914-1995). It is plausible that the artistic style and thematic elements of the illustrations bear a connection to the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students, held in Moscow in 1957, which marked the inaugural… Read More

Description:
Rare in good condition. The book, which revolves around a little girl and her kitten and was created through the collaboration of Marshak and Lebedev, gained immense popularity and underwent numerous republishings. Samuil Marshak named as "the founder of Russia's children's literature," (1887-1964), and Vladimir Lebedev (1891-1967) was one of the most significant Russian illustrators of children's books at the XXth century. The first book edition of this poem was published in 1930. Each other edition saw the artist altering the cover and illustrations. Lebedev's unique style was inspired by the lithographed books of Russian futurists in the 1910s. However, after the appearance of a critical article in the Pravda newspaper on March 1, 1936, denouncing his work as "formalist," he underwent a substantial transformation in his avant-garde style. Soviet repression also encompassed the remarkable circle of artists and writers who had been mentored by both Marshak and Lebedev. Many of their artistic… Read More

These verses by the Soviet Yiddish poet Shike (Ovsei) Driz (1908-1971) were masterfully translated by Genrikh Sapgir (1928-1999), one of the leaders of the Soviet Nonconformist Art movement and member of the underground 'Lianozovo Group'.The book was illustrated by an artist, writer, art theorist and one of the 'founding fathers' of the Moscow Conceptualist artistic movement Viktor Pivovarov (born 1937). He studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute under Pavel Korin. As well as some others avant-garde artists since 1930s illustrated children's books to stay away from repressions, Pivovarov did the same in 1960-1970s. Since late 1960s he worked in the Detskaya Literatura publishing house where he met representatives of the 'Lianozovo group' Igor Kholin and Genrikh Sapgir, and through them, Ovsei Driz and Ilya Kabakov.
