Cosmonauts flew aboard Soyuz 28 from 2 to 10 March 1978. The flight was the first mission in the Intercosmos program. 2. Boris Volynov (b. 1934), Pavel Popovich (1930-2009), Georgy Beregovoy (1921-1995) and Miroslaw Hermaszewski (b. 1941) with daughter. 1979. 9x6 cm. Boris Volynov is the first Jewish cosmonaut. It is highly probable that this unusual photograph was captured during a journey to Altai, often referred to as "the Siberian Switzerland." Prior to the Soviet era, Russians did not have a strong tradition of traveling extensively within the country, especially accompanied by children and photography equipment. One could infer that these tourists possessed sufficient wealth to have a photographer or a camera accompany them on their expedition. Furthermore, this isn't merely a conventional group photo; here, each participant, including women with children, finds their own spot on a rocky hill. Additionally, it's noteworthy that the two women featured in the photograph are dressed in traditional town attire adorned with intricate embroidery. Notably, they are also wearing gloves and hats.

The photograph captures a group of men before a baigue, which is one of the oldest and widely practiced forms of horse racing among Turkic people. Baigue involves riding across rugged terrains for long distances (in the past, ranging from 5–15 km and sometimes exceeding 50 km), where the rider's tactical skill plays a crucial role. Its origin is rooted in the nomadic way of life and the need to train horses for long journeys. Today, baigue races are conducted at hippodromes.Based on the owner's mark, this particular photo was taken in South Kazakhstan in 1930s. It is important to highlight that between 1929 and 1931, Kazakhstan witnessed more than 370 uprisings against the Soviet policy of enforced collectivization and the consequent dismantling of the traditional nomadic lifestyle. These uprisings were met with brutal suppression by the authorities.

Later print.This collection includes rare photos of Tamchinsky Dastan – 'the center of Buddhism in eastern Siberia' (was closed in January 1938 and reopened only in 1990), monks in Cham dance masks, seated Tara statue, the statue of the Buryat lama (shiretui) Ganzhirva Gegen of Tsugol Datsan (was closed and ransacked in 1933 ), and monks (samanera), who print religious texts. Original photos of Tamchinsky Dastan and monks in masks were made by writer and the first photographer of Buryatia Nikolay Charushin (1852-1937) during his exile in 1878-1895.

The collection includes photos from the Caucasus Nature Reserve (wildlife nature, Guzeripl Dolmen, a megalithic tomb), Kabardino-Balkaria (Nalchik, Kunnyum Aul in Upper Balkaria, abandoned nowadays, Chegem waterfalls) and Karachay-Cherkessia (Teberda and Dombay; especially interesting are photos with Karachay guides and photo of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Convent, also abandoned nowadays). According to owner's marks and plots, all photos were taken by professional geographers.

This handmade album made by military officers in the begging of the Cold War. Most likely, those officers served at ALSIB - the Soviet Union portion of the Alaska-Siberian air road receiving Lend-Lease aircraft from the Northwest Staging Route. On the other side, probably, military presence in Chukotka had a connection with the formation of NATO (April 4, 1949) and the first Soviet nuclear weapons test (August 29, 1949).
The album includes wild nature and landscape photos (Anadyr and Tanyurer river, Oymyakon selo), but especially interesting are photos of Chukchi people and their daily life. Last photo depicted Soviet soldier siting on the whale bone.

[Leningrad?], [1979].
This unusual book was a birthday gift from colleges to archaeologist and ethnographer, full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Alexey Okladnikov (1908-1981). He was an expert in the ancient cultures and history of Siberia, Far East and Mongolia. Okladnikov made numerous important discoveries, including the first Neanderthal remains in the USSR at Teshik Tash (Uzbekistan) and unique figurines at the Upper Palaeolithic site of Buret' in the Angara River basin (Eastern Siberia).The book includes Okladnikov's biography brief and photos from archeological site of Buret' in the Angara Valley and different expeditions along the Amur River. Some photos were taken from Okladnikov's book Ancient Art of the Amur Region (1981): petroglyphs in the province of Lower Amur and Ussuri, primitive sculptures, shaman's figures, amulets and clothing, jewelry and many other artefacts. Last group photo with people in traditional costumes was taken in Mongolian People's Republic.

Dalstroy (Far North Construction Trust) was created in 1931 by the OGPU (predecessor of the NKVD) in order to manage road construction, the mining of gold, exploration and production of other strategically important minerals in the Magadan-Chukotka region of the north of Russian Far East (Kolyma). Work in extreme northern conditions was carried out by civilians employed by Dalstroy as labor force and prisoners from various forced labor camps (near 80 Gulag camps) scattered across a vast territory subordinate to the trust.

Photo of besieged Leningrad are very rare.
During the WWII Aleksandr Brodsky (1903-1984), an officer, photojournalist and poet Joseph Brodsky's father, was a press photographer for the army newspapers at the Leningrad front and served tours of duty in several hot battles. Most likely, this photo was taken in the Fort Reef in Kronshtadt. The main bases of Leningrad/Kronshtadt were under siege from 1942 to the autumn 1944. The coastal forces had to try to keep the route from Kronshtadt to the advanced base of Lavansaari open and to defend them from German-Finnish intrusions.
After the war Aleksandr Brodsky served at the Leningrad Naval Museum. 'In 1948, Zhdanov signed a law that forbade officers of Jewish origin to hold high positions in the Soviet Navy. It was a secret law, you could not read about it in newspapers – but it was the law all right. These rare photos depicted the route to Teberda town, Kamennomost aul and Kulhorsky mountain pass (Caucasus).Especially interesting is photo with Karachay's women in traditional costumes carrying buckets of water. In 1943 Karachay Autonomous Oblast was dissolved and the Karachay people (almost 70 000 Karachay natives, including old men, women and children) were deported to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan for their alleged collaboration with the Germans. The operation Seagull lasted just two days. Their territory was divided between the Georgian SSR and Stavropol Krai.The photos printed and probably made by professional photographer V. Piatov who lives in Karachay. Little is known about him. He has also one more stamp with place: town Batalpashinsk (Popov A.P. Rossiiskie fotografy (1839-1930). Т.2. М, 2013. P. 229).

Extremely rare photos.Ostyak-Vogul National Okrug (since 1940 Khanty-Mansi National Okrug) was established on December 1930. Siberian peoples were displeased with the intervention that the Soviets undertook. 'The civilization' policies included settling them into villages, ban of all ethnic customs, collectivization of hunting, fishing and reindeer breeding. Children were removed from traditional homes to boarding schools, where native language and cultural beliefs were forbidden. There were revolts against the Soviet government, for example, Kazym rebellion 1931-1934 and Mandalada (Yamal rebellion) in 1934 and 1943. The rebellions were crushed by the army and the more distant villages were bombed by the air forces.

This collection of photos includes depictions of views from Khiva, the capital of the Khanate of Khiva, and the palaces of the Khiva khans, including the alley near Nurullaboy Palace and the pool. Additionally, the collection features images with the traces of what might have been a prison, possibly for women along with their graves, the local people crossing the Shavat canal, musicians at a party, and various other scenes portraying the everyday life of the local population.At least one of these photos - the wedding palanquin from Yomud nomads in Turkmenistan - was captured by Khudaibergen Devanov (Hudaibergen Divonov; 1879-1940), a pioneering Uzbek photographer, cinematographer, filmmaker, and cameraman. He is highly regarded as a prominent cultural figure in his hometown of Khiva, responsible for documenting his city and its individuals through photography. This collection includes rare photos of Mestia – main town in Upper Svaneti, historical province in Georgia. The town is well-known for the stone defensive towers (Svan towers). Most of them date back to the period between the 9th and 12th centuries. Since 1996, these traditional towers have been protected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Especially interesting is Svan-hunter in traditional costume with ibex head photo. Svans, a subgroup of Georgians, have kept their traditions because of the isolation at various times throughout history. Hunting is still a popular avocation of Svans today. In 1921 Svans rebelled against the recently established Bolshevik regime in Georgia, but the uprising was crushed, and the chief rebels were executed. However, the Soviet regime was established only in 1924. During this time roads were built, an air service was established and industries such as mining and lumbering were developed. OSOAVIAKhIM (Society for Assistance in Defense and for the Aviation-Chemical Build-up of the USSR), the most powerful paramilitary voluntary organization, was created in January 1927 by merging three societies, one of which was created by L. Trotsky. The goal of the society was preparation of reserves for armed forces. A person could join OSOAVIAKhIM as early as 14. Military training and general military studies were carried on with instruction in what came later to be called civil defence. Beyond that, OSOAVIAKhIM had taken the responsibility for continual retraining of the reserve officers in the new techniques and technology appearing in the Red Army.

This is an original photograph featuring the writer Philip Roth and actress Nicole Kidman. The photo was taken at the popular New York restaurant, the Russian Samovar, on April 26, 2002. It is likely that multiple copies of this photograph were produced, with one being displayed in the restaurant itself. This particular photo was captured during the filming of 'The Human Stain' movie in 2003, in which both Kidman and Roth were involved. Philip Roth was known to frequent this restaurant.
The Russian Samovar was established in 1986 by emigrants from the USSR, including art critic Roman Kaplan, dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, Joseph Brodsky. Brodsky contributed a portion of his Nobel Prize money to help create the restaurant.

Most likely, these photographs were taken by Yevgeny Pavlovsky (1884-1965), a prominent zoologist, entomologist, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). He is renowned for orchestrating numerous expeditions to Central Asia, the Transcaucasus, Crimea, and the Russian Far East, all with the purpose of studying endemic parasitic and transmissible diseases. Notably, in 1928, he journeyed to Tajikistan to combat local outbreaks of smallpox, tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid, and other infectious diseases.The photographs capture the lives of local people. Of particular interest is the image showing a man on a specialized bed designed to protect against fleas as part of efforts against typhoid.
