Description:
It is highly probable that this unusual photograph was captured during a journey to Altai, often referred to as "the Siberian Switzerland." Prior to the Soviet era, Russians did not have a strong tradition of traveling extensively within the country, especially accompanied by children and photography equipment. One could infer that these tourists possessed sufficient wealth to have a photographer or a camera accompany them on their expedition. Furthermore, this isn't merely a conventional group photo; here, each participant, including women with children, finds their own spot on a rocky hill. Additionally, it's noteworthy that the two women featured in the photograph are dressed in traditional town attire adorned with intricate embroidery. Notably, they are also wearing gloves and hats.

Description:
First and only edition.
On May 25, 1928, the airship Nobile crashed on the Arctic Ocean ice, marking one of the greatest tragedies in aviation history and triggering the first major international search and rescue operation. Responding to the distress call, the Soviet Union, with its excellent resources, dispatched three Arctic icebreakers: the Malygin, the Sedov, and the Krasin. The Krasin was under the command of Professor Rudolf Samoylovich, an Arctic explorer and a personal friend of Nobile. Despite facing propeller failure, the Soviet icebreaker Krasin managed to successfully rescue the majority of the stranded travelers on July 12.This book about the operation was written by the female journalist of newspaper "Trud" (Labor) Liubov Vorontsova (1900-1972). Due to logistical constraints, she earned her place by working as a stoker and assistant radio operator. It's important to note that there were only two women on the Krasin: Vorontsova and Kseniia Aleksandrovich, who worked as a cabin cleaner… Read More

Description:
Gelatin silver print. Rare.
The photograph captures a group of men before a baigue, which is one of the oldest and widely practiced forms of horse racing among Turkic people. Baigue involves riding across rugged terrains for long distances (in the past, ranging from 5–15 km and sometimes exceeding 50 km), where the rider's tactical skill plays a crucial role. Its origin is rooted in the nomadic way of life and the need to train horses for long journeys. Today, baigue races are conducted at hippodromes.Based on the owner's mark, this particular photo was taken in South Kazakhstan in 1930s. It is important to highlight that between 1929 and 1931, Kazakhstan witnessed more than 370 uprisings against the Soviet policy of enforced collectivization and the consequent dismantling of the traditional nomadic lifestyle. These uprisings were met with brutal suppression by the authorities.

Description:
This collection of photos includes depictions of views from Khiva, the capital of the Khanate of Khiva, and the palaces of the Khiva khans, including the alley near Nurullaboy Palace and the pool. Additionally, the collection features images with the traces of what might have been a prison, possibly for women along with their graves, the local people crossing the Shavat canal, musicians at a party, and various other scenes portraying the everyday life of the local population. At least one of these photos - the wedding palanquin from Yomud nomads in Turkmenistan - was captured by Khudaibergen Devanov (Hudaibergen Divonov; 1879-1940), a pioneering Uzbek photographer, cinematographer, filmmaker, and cameraman. He is highly regarded as a prominent cultural figure in his hometown of Khiva, responsible for documenting his city and its individuals through photography. In 1938, he was sent to a political prisoner camp where he was executed. It is possible that Devanov also captured three photographs from this… Read More

Description:
Most likely, these photographs were taken by Yevgeny Pavlovsky (1884-1965), a prominent zoologist, entomologist, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). He is renowned for orchestrating numerous expeditions to Central Asia, the Transcaucasus, Crimea, and the Russian Far East, all with the purpose of studying endemic parasitic and transmissible diseases. Notably, in 1928, he journeyed to Tajikistan to combat local outbreaks of smallpox, tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid, and other infectious diseases. The photographs capture the lives of local people. Of particular interest is the image showing a man on a specialized bed designed to protect against fleas as part of efforts against typhoid. In 1929, Pavlovsky published a book titled "Animal Parasites and Certain Human Parasitic Diseases in Tajikistan", in which one of these photos was included (along with another from a different angle). In 1932, at the behest of the scientist, the foundation of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was… Read More

One of 5 000 copies published. First and only Russian edition.
Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897 ended in tragedy, claiming the lives of all three expedition members: S. A. Andrée, Knut Frænkel, and Nils Strindberg. Andrée, the first Swedish balloonist, proposed an audacious journey by hydrogen balloon from Svalbard to either Russia or Canada, with the ambitious aim of passing directly over the North Pole. This plan received enthusiastic support in Sweden, a northern nation keen to assert its presence in the race to reach the North Pole.In July 1897, Andrée, Strindberg, and Frænkel set out on their expedition from Svalbard. Unfortunately, the balloon quickly lost hydrogen and crashed onto the ice after just two days. Although the explorers survived the crash unharmed, they faced a grueling journey southward across the treacherous drifting ice. Ill-prepared and lacking adequate clothing and equipment, they struggled to navigate the challenging terrain and ultimately succumbed to the… Read More

Description:
Gelatin silver print, printed later.
Most likely, the photograph depicts two Tuvan women, members of a Turco-Mongol ethnic group indigenous to Siberia, dressed in traditional costumes ("ton" robe). It is possible that the original image was taken during an ethnographic expedition in the late 19th century.Historically, during the Qing dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of China, Tuva was part of Outer Mongolia known as Tannu Uriankhai. However, in 1911, Tuva broke away and established the Uryankhay Republic following the Xinhai Revolution, which led to the formation of the Republic of China. In 1914, Tuva became a Russian protectorate and later evolved into the nominally independent Tuvan People's Republic in 1921, officially known as Tannu Tuva until 1926. This republic was recognized only by its neighboring countries, the Soviet Union and Mongolia. However, in 1944, Tannu Tuva was annexed by the Soviet Union.

Rare.
This photograph captures the affluent bride from Samagaltay, a rural locality (selo) and the administrative center of the Tes-Khemsky District in Tuva, situated in southern Siberia. Samagaltay held the position of Tuva's capital until 1921. The bride is depicted inside a yurt, a customary circular tent that serves as a common dwelling, alongside a kitchen cupboard and a table adorned with a traditional teapot and piyala—a small bowl specifically used for drinking tea. Her hair is adorned with a chavaga, an exquisite piece of jewelry that holds great value and is typically passed down through generations. The bride wears the chavaga as a symbol of her transition into womanhood.During the Qing dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of China, Tuva was historically a part of Outer Mongolia known as Tannu Uriankhai. However, in 1911, Tuva broke away and formed the Uryankhay Republic after the Xinhai Revolution, which led to the creation of the Republic of China. In… Read More
