This performance stars Renata Scotto, Placido Domingo, Elena Obraztsova, and Sherrill Milnes, with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Ambrosian opera Chorus, conducted by James Levine. [# 2046-2-RG] This is an excellent digitally-remastered CD release of the original 1977 recording, featuring Placido Domingo, Renata Scotto, and Sherrill Milnes - with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and John Aldiss Choir conducted by James Levine. A magnificent recording of Giordano's 1896 opera, with libretto by Luigi Illica. "An ardent poet and a young noblewoman are passionately attracted, only to be separated by the turmoil and terror of the French Revolution." CONDITION: The Fine scratch-free CDs (sound-tested from beginning to end) play beautifully and have a Fine booklet, insert, and jewel-case (though the card-stock slipcase has light corner-wear). Michael Feingold's English translation from the German original of Harry Kupfer and Krzysztof Penderecki, to accompany the 1988 Santa Fe Opera production of Penderecki's third opera. 48 pages ---*****with a copy of the Albuquerque Journal review (by David Noble) laid in. CONDITION: a bright, tight, uncreased Fine Minus copy with negligible shelf-wear, unmarked but for the previous owner's signature inside. Paris: Erato / Radio France, 1987. Assumed First Edition . No Binding. Near Fine/Near Fine. 12.5" x 12.5. Erato NUM 75271. This is likely the definitive performance of Chausson's 1903 operatic masterpiece "Le Roi Arthus". This performance features Teresa Zylis-Gara, Gino Quilico, and Gosta Winbergh with Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique and Choers de Radio France, conducted by Armin Jordan. The Program Notes and Libretto (Chausson's own) are in French, English, and German - in a 135-page booklet. CONDITION: Three NEAR FINE to FINE LP records [not CDs!] in a solid, sturdy NEAR FINE box (with minimal shelf-wear and a discreetly tape-repaired bottom-edge tear). The LPs - tested and cleaned before listing - play beautifully, with general negligible-to-minimal surface noise. (The beginning of Side 5 is a little noisy, but then settles down.) Very Good. 10.5" x 13.5. ***FORMAT: This large-size score contains four orchestral systems (i.e., four small "pages" per large page) the entire score containing the complete opera. [Kalmus # F332] Mozart's great comic opera in two acts, with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte. CONTENTS: list of roles; premiere details; orchestration, brief synopsis of scenes; the score. 100 pages. CONDITION: The Fine Minus score pages are near-pristine (unmarked and uncreased), but the cover (with moderate edge- and corner-wear), has some rear-panel color-fading and surface loss at the bottom right corner (discreetly repaired with near-invisible library archival tape). This remains a quite respectable copy - now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag with archival backing board.

Boston: Oliver Ditson & Co., 1887. Late 19th Century Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/G+ to VG-. 8.5" x 11. This antique piano/vocal score is in English only, with no attribution to either the libretto or the translation. The 1887 date is speculation on my part, but the original owner, one Stephen Chase, has signed the cover and dated his acquisition as "May 25, 1887". CONTENTS: internal title page, Table of Characters, Outline of Sections; 372 pages. CONDITION: this copy shows its age rather well, though the covers are soiled and shelf-worn, with a couple edge/corner chips. It appears that the front cover has been reattached with near-invisible archival tape. The interior, in contrast, is unmarked but for the names of two singers in the margin next to the characters Margaret and Faust [Mrs. Henschel & Geo. J. Parker]. A stunning "live" performance, recorded at the Berlin Festival in 1987, featuring vocal soloists Michael Myers, Jean-Philippe Lafont, Anne Sofie van Otter, Rene Schirrer, and Fiona Wright - with the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and the Orchestre de l'Opera de Lyon, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. Total Time: 2:04:03. CONDITION: Fine unscratched CDs with jewelcase, booklet, tray insert, and ***cardstock slipcase (My scans are from the slipcase.) CDs were played twice; they play beautifully.

Boris Khaikin and the Soviet Radio Symphony Orchestra and Academic Choir, with a cast led by Alexander Polyakov, Nina Lebedeva, Alexsei Usmanov, and Yevgeny Vladimirov. A scarce archival LP vinyl recording af Anton Rubinstein's 1871 opera, with libretto by Pavel Viskovatov (based on the poem by Mikhail Lermontov). It was premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1875, then at the Bolshoi in Moscow in 1879. NOTE: This is a "live" performance, from a 1974 radio broadcast. CONDITION: The discs are not what we would consider "high fidelity" but do reflect an excellent overall musical performance. The surfaces are generally quiet, with light surface noise occasionally apparent when the musical textures thin out. The record box is solid, square, and unmarked, with only light shelf-wear. This recording stars Eva Marton and Jose Carreras, with the Hungarian Radio/Television Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Giuseppe Patane. Total Time: 1:35:01. CONDITION: Fine unscratched CDs with Fine double jewelcase and tray inserts, a Near Fine 241-page booklet (light edge-/corner-wear), and Very Good Plus slipcase (moderate corner-scuffing). The CDs were played twice and sound beautifully. (NOTE: In a production faux pas, CBS underestimated the thickness of the booklet, and it plus the double jewelcase are very tight in their slipcase and a bit difficult to extract.)
