Description:
Octavo (8 3/4 by 5 5/8 inches) Raleigh (North Carolina): Printed at the Star Office, 1850. Original 12 page printed speech in the form of a pamphlet, bound by thread, folded into thirds, to fit into its original mailing envelope (formed by a folded sheet of paper, with wax seal) addressed to "Andrew Calhoun Esq. Union Town Perry County, Alabama," with postal cancel dated Dec. 11 at Raleigh. Very good condition, (three corrections to text in ink.)

Shepard states his belief, that despite his love for the Union, the right of secession is a right of the people; and "That the fugitive slave ... bill would impede an owner of a slave from retaking his property .... "
