Description:
Paperback. Near Fine. Camberwell Press in association with Royal Mail, 1999, only edition, published in an edition of 2000 copies; 150x136mm, 120pp, unnumbered and each consisting of a folded sheet uncut at the fore-edge and perforated horizontally at the midline; hand bound by Shepherds Bookbinders in charcoal paper over card and designed to mimic an envelope, all edges silvered; very small smudge on the upper corner of one of the blank pages towards the end but otherwise a near fine copy. *** *** *** The book is the intended outcome of the Royal Mail Millennium Stamps project and is a wonderful celebration of British art and design. 48 specially designed stamps, four a month, were commissioned from a range of British artists and issued during 1999. These were printed in 11 rather than the usual four colours and all 48 are included (as real stamps) in the volume, each stamp framed by imaginative and appropriate text by Michael Benson. As Jonathan Glancy writes in his review in the…

Description:
Soft cover. Very Good. Freedom Press, London, 1970; 140 x 214mm, pp 32; paper wrappers; staples rather rusted but otherwise a very good copy The cover story is a 10pp feature by Vivian Harper "Bertrand Russell and the anarchists". This draws on earlier material, including on an unsigned review in Anarchy in 1918 of Russell's book "Roads to Freedom", on his trenchant criticisms of the state socialism which had developed in Russia post-1917 and on his activities against war in general and in support of unilateral disarmament in the 1960s. Harper concludes that although Russell was not an anarchist he clearly had a leaning towards that philosophy (as he had himself acknowledged in his writing) ending by writing "For generations he has been a liberating influence". Description:
Hardback. Very Good. Watts & Co., London, 1960, 1st edition; 8vo, pp [ii], 87; original red cloth, spine text in silver; corners and edges a little rubbed in places but a very good copy. Purcell was a prolific and accomplished writer, a sinologist, colonial civil servant, a lecturer at Cambridge on Far Eastern History, a specialist on Malaya, a poet and, as here, a satirical dramatist sending up British snobbery and the unco'guid. His rebuttal of the distaste of a certain type of snob for Bertrand Russell takes the loose form of "Macbeth", interspered with explanatory comment and brings in not only the three sisters of the title but the likes of the ghosts of Samuel Wilberforce and T H Huxley as well as numerous historic and imaginary figures including bellicose generals ("I have always believed in keeping the warlike spirit alive in peacetime"), prominent Christians such as Hilaire Belloc or others of imagined note such as the Archbishop of Tooting Bec. Russell,…

At a time of growing concern about the annihilation of humanity as a result of the growth in nuclear weapon capability the five articles and other material in the book address the question of containment and disarmament. Description:
Hardback. Good. The Dublin Review (not to be confused with the modern literary journal) was the leading Catholic periodical of its time, having begun in 1836 as a quarterly, continuing until its demise in 1969. It was founded by the barrister and journalist Michael Joseph Quin who brought in Daniel O'Connell and Cardinal Wiseman to the project. The aim was "to provide a record of current thought for educated Catholics and ... to be an exponent of Catholic views to non-Catholic inquirers" and to this end it recruited eminent and well-regarded writers on religious, historical and literary topics and with much focus on science. Despite its name the Review was printed and published in London. Issue four, April 1837, 344pp plus opening Contents leaf; bound in blue-green cloth, spine titled gilt, no specific title page as the original wrappers are not bound in; slightly rubbed at the extremities and with a very few stamps of the Franciscan Convent Library, Wexford, scattered around but…

No Binding. Good. 4pp publication, 225x278mm, being a single folded sheet; printed by Cunningham and Salmon, 110 [or 119] Fleet Street, London and published by W Strange, 21 Paternoster Row. Once folded to a quarter size and therefore both creased and marked along the folds; slightly frayed at the edges and somewhat dustmarked but in quite fair or better condition, particularly for such an ephemeral item. The paper mimics a standard journal of the time with four columns across carrying a wide range of apparent news, comment and reporting. However, every single item mocks or lampoons the episcopal church or sometimes the government; for instance the shipping news includes a sailing "For the Land of Humbug, Direct ... the tithed-bottomed vessel Rapacity ... has the greater part of her villainy on board, possesses excellent accommodation for Church Cormorants and Clerical Sharpers ... apply to ... the Agents, False Doctrine, Heresy, and Schism, No 1, Pompous-place, near the Mitre, Bishop's…
