Boston: Privately Printed by The Chapple Publishing Company, Ltd., 1915. First edition. Octavo (9.5" x 7"), xvi & 410 pages, with frontis & 92 illustrations from photographs on 16 plates. Publisher's green cloth lettered & decorated in gilt, with a photographic illustration applied to the front cover. Laid-in is a signed form letter on the author's letterhead with "My Esteemed Boy Scout" as salutation.
Spine gilt dull, binding lightly soiled, brief wear at corners, text toned in the margins, otherwise a very good or better copy.
An uncommon book in which the author presents in two sections the diaries of his hunting trips in Africa. The first excursion, in 1911, was to the Guaso Nyero region of British East Africa, the second, in 1913, to northwestern Rhodesia. Boston: Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, printed by Wright & Potter, April 4, 1881. First edition. Original folio broadside measuring approximately 15 inches by 9.5 inches printed recto only on medium paper. Not found in OCLC as of 3/30/2024.
Old folds, Moderately toned & soiled, edge wear including creasing & a one inch tear, otherwise good or better & still quite attractive.
"The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals asks the attention of all good citizens to the law of the Commonwealth for the protection of our small birds and their nests, and it invites their co-operation in the enforcement of the same. The penalty is ten dollars for killing each bird, and for wilfully destroying, disturbing or taking their nests or eggs, the same sum; one-half of the fine goes to the complainant, and one-half to the city or town where the offense is committed …" ~Excerpted from the text.

George Thorndike Angell (1823 – 1909) founded the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1868 & in 1889 founded the American Humane Education Society. Both organizations continue to this day.
