Upper margins slightly sunned, ffep creased, text block beginning to slip at the top of the spine, otherwise Very Good in Fine dust jacket. A lovely book which was produced in conjunction with an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art from November 15, 1998 to February 15, 1999: " presents examples of Edo art in all media, discussed in the context of ornament, samurai arts, work, religion and festivals, landscapes and travel, and entertainment. Experts in the field have written essays that address the themes and entries that focus on the individual works of art." [Tokyo, Japan]: Victor's Pearls/ Imperial Hotel, no date (circa 1960s). 32mo (4.5" x 3"). Publisher's striped blue & red cloth over flexible boards lettered in gilt on the upper cover.
Gilt dull affecting legibility, lacking "magic Glass," otherwise very good.
A splendid & sexy guide apparently given to gentlemen patrons of Victor's Pearls which had a location in Tokyo's Imperial Hotel. Provides 38 pages of color illustrations from photographs featuring gorgeous nude & semi-nude girls, mostly Asian, & a few examples of suggestive but not explicit Shunga. 92 pages follow for diary entries (unused), addresses, memos, & a chart for determining time world-wide. In conclusion are 6 "Stereo Nude Pictures" from photos. Sadly, the "Magic Glass" for viewing the girls in 3 dimensions is lacking.
Quite uncommon, we have been unable to locate another example.

Tokyo: Kodansha International, (1969). First American edition & first translation from the Japanese. Octavo (8.5" x 6.25"), 149 pages. Publisher's deep red cloth lettered in silver on the spine, in pictorial dust jacket. Publisher's card soliciting information to assist with "promoting cultural exchange between East & West" laid-in.
Almost indiscernible small stain on the upper cover, previous owner Julia Kuroda's rubber-stamped name & address at the bottom edge of text block, still very good or better in near fine dust jacket with a trace of edge wear.
This copy from the library of Julia N. Kuroda, the wife of Rev. Andrew Y. Kuroda. The Kurodas were interned at the Thule Lake, California relocation camp after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.
Kawabata was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968 "for his narrative mastery, which with great sensibility expresses the essence of the Japanese mind."

Tokyo: Shinkenchiku Sha, (1974). First edition thus. Complete in two quarto volumes, one with 100 accordion folded plates on double leaves (26 in color); the other (47 pp plus folding timeline chart) providing descriptive text in Japanese with English translation. Publisher's gilt-threaded black silk with printed paper title labels on the upper covers, in folding sleeve & slipcase, both in matching black silk, the slipcase lettered in gilt on the spine, with printed paper title label on the upper cover. Both volumes slightly soiled, small spot on the blank verso of the timeline in the text volume, sleeve & slipcase briefly soiled & lightly rubbed, otherwise Near Fine. A one volume edition without English translation was published in 1973.

Japan: Unpublished, 1909 - 1954. Approximately 430 presumably amateur silver gelatin photographs, 6.5" x 5" and smaller, and a couple of real photo postcards housed in three commercial albums, oblong or vertical quartos measuring about 11 inches by 8 inches. The compiler is unknown but quite possibly "Takamasa" (first name) or his descendants. His photograph is the first image in the album we have identified as album A. The photos are dated as early as 1909 and as late as 1954 with most from the mid twenties to late thirties. Many of the images include manuscript and occasionally rubber-stamped or printed annotations in Japanese on the versos An eight page English translation accompanies the archive. Albums rubbed (one flaking with joints beginning to split), certainly Good or better. The images show occasional creasing, silver mirroring, & fading but are generally Very Good. Complete in three small folio volumes: 224; 215, [1]; & 220 pp, profusely illustrated mostly from photographs (many in color). Publisher's yellow, red, or light blue cloth lettered in black on the spines, housed in a black cloth slipcase with printed paper label on the upper cover, secured by bone clasps. Spine lettering lightly rubbed, slight soiling, trace edge wear, otherwise Very Good An extensive survey of Japan near the end of the mid-century period. The lengthy introduction concludes with a portion of the preamble of the Japanese Constitution: "We desire to occupy an honored place in an international society striving for the preservation of peace, and the banishment of tyranny and slavery, oppression and intolerance for all time from the earth."Please note, international shipping is by quote only for this 16 lb set.

Yoshimura (1921 - 1997) was a distinguished bonsai master largely credited with introducing traditional Japanese techniques and aesthetics to Western bonsai enthusiasts.

Although Kaneko specialized in depictions of women in bondage, the illustrations here, while often erotic, are more surreal than anything He is also remembered for his illustrations for a Japanese edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland

Forty-four of the images are titled in the negative. No place [Okinawa ?]: U.S.S Monroe., 1945. Stapled newsletter. Broken run of 5 issues presumably published aboard: June 21, 23, 24, 26, & 27, 1945. Small folios (13" x 8"), each 2 stapled sheets, 4 pp. printed recto & verso in two columns. Includes cartoon appearances by Blondie, Male Call, & others. Not found in OCLC as of 6/8/2020.
Additionally included are two defective issues (June 18 & 22), each lacking a leaf.
Moderate edge wear, age toned, otherwise good or better.
Undoubtedly produced in small numbers, these crudely produced newsletters are replete with dramatic headlines & encouraging news. The June 21 issue was published the day before the end of the 82 day Battle of Okinawa, the rest in the immediate aftermath.
The U.S.S. President Monroe was a President Jackson-class attack transport. Included among her passengers were Lieutenant Junior Grade Richard Nixon who shipped out from San Francisco to the South Pacific in 1943.

Produced in small numbers, these crudely printed newsletters are replete with dramatic headlines & encouraging news. Claiming circulation of 3500, the September 30 issue notes that "We can't supply every man with a paper, so why not post a copy on a bulletin board?"

[23]) is 17 Kami Negishi which, as noted in OCLC (citing the BAL), is one of three Tokyo-only printings but preceded by an issue with the address provided as 38 Honmura-cho.

Provides 2 pages of text in Japanese & English & 18 woodblock prints in various states tipped to decorated light card stock.
Margins slight sunned, hint of creasing at a couple of illustrations, otherwise near fine.
Presents a series of nine steps demonstating the process of woodblock printing with each step accompanied by 2 plates.
