Description:
New York: New Yorkers for Abortion Law Repeal, 1970. First separate printing (originally published in Notes from the Second Year: Women's Liberation). 4to (11" x 8.5"), single sheet folded to form 4 pages, printed on white paper.
Brief portion of page one redacted (upper right), otherwise a Fine uncirculated copyAn early member of the radical feminist group Redstockings, Ms Cisler's important & prescient essay focuses on anti-abortion tactics & argues that settling for reform to existing law would result in a situation "in which abortion is grudgingly parceled out by hospital committee fiat to the few women who can 'prove' they've been raped, or who are crazy, or are in danger of bearing a defective baby." Quite uncommon, OCLC finds a single copy at the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Description:
New York: New Yorkers for Abortion Law Repeal, no date [1970]. First edition. 4to (11" x 8.5"), single sheet folded to form 4 pages, printed on yellow paper.
Brief portion of page one redacted (upper right), otherwise a Fine uncirculated copy. In 1970 New York became the second state (after Hawaii) to pass broad legislation legalizing abortion. Prior, although several states permitted some exceptions, abortion was essentially illegal in the United States. Interestingly, the New York legislation did not include a residency requirement, as Hawaii did, and in the first two years, women from other states accounted for 60% of abortions in New York. As the author writes, presciently as it seems, "The recent change in New York state's abortion laws has met with widespread, but largely unwarranted, praise The enactment of "the nation's most liberal abortion law" is certainly a pleasing indication of the speed at which public and legislative opinion is progressing The fact that the New York abortion bill was… Read More

Covers soiled, modest edge wear, foxing throughout (heavy at times), one leaf with corner crease, a good or so copy of an important book.
Alice Duer Miller's gathering of satirical poetry, prose, & a three-page play all related to women's rights & suffrage, much of which was originally published in the New York Tribune. Particularly engaging is the section entitled "Campaign Material" in which Ms. Miller provides tongue-in-cheek reasons for denying suffrage:
"BECAUSE no woman will leave her domestic duties to vote;
Because no women who may vote will attend to her domestic duties;
Because every woman will vote as her husband tells her to; ...
Because will form a solid party and outvote men ..."

"Increasing numbers of Black and Puerto Rican people in this city are opening their eyes to the cruel and unjust system that oppresses us. It is this system which sends our sons to die in Indochina for "freedom" and "democracy" - in the name of the very rights denied us here at home. We fight against our Vietnamese brothers and sisters when the main enemy is right here at home.That enemy is capitalism - the system of Nixon, Rockefeller, Wallace and Lindsay.
