In the 1820s he continued in the iron stove business, and in 1831 he received a patent for an improvement in stoves. He became a prominent stove manufacturer, employing iron from furnaces throughout Pennsylvania; by the end of the century his grandson, Powell Stackhouse (b. 1840), was president of Cambria Iron Co. William Ward (1837-1895) was born in Philadelphia and attended Girard College, the boarding school established by Stephen Girard (1750-1831) for poor, white, male orphans. Ward learned printing while working at the Delaware County Republican in Chester, Pa., and then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859.
