Poughkeepsie, NY, 1887. Flexible leather album, front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes, spine decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. 98 pp, 19 of them blank, leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures, 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English, 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds, with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines, wife of the President of Eastman College ( the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1"). The rest of the stamps are males, either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie, NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good, the leather rubbed at edges, rear leather cover about half loosened from the board, light soiling. Pacific Theater, World War II: Self-published, 1943. A superb World War II archive featuring a significant manuscript photograph album (oblong 17" x 12") containing 147 photographs on 46 pages (17 pages blank at rear), service records, citations, orders, medals, patches, bars, newspaper clippings, ID card, dog tags, and additional loose photographs and negatives, all belonging to Edwin Oscar Ahbe (1916-1995) . Ahbe was inducted on Dec. 1, 1943, reporting to Camp Peekskill, NY and serving as a Cameraman Motion Picture 043 and Combat Photographer in the 3374th Signal Photographic Service Company. After stops at Fort Sheridan and Camps Smith and Crowder, his first overseas photographs in the album begin in Ceylon. A small manuscript list shows he left NY early on Oct. 20, 1944 and records him being in Newfoundland, Azores, Cashblanca (sic), Tripoli, Cairo, Aboudan Iran, Karachi India, Kandy Ceylon, Burma, and China. Original Photographs A collection of seven 7" x 9" and five 8" x 10" original black and white photographs, undated but appear circa 1970s-1980s, eight depicting motorcycle racers and four, automobile racers including one SCARCE photo of Paul Newman sitting in a race car. No attribution as to photographers and no writing to verso of any of the photos. Five of the 7 x 9 motorcycle photos are European, as some of the signage shows "BMW Clubs of Europe". This mimeographed country and folk music journal which has been called a veritable "research discography". Published quarterly starting in 1951, the 16 issues are Vol. 1, Nos.1-4, 1951; Vol. 2, Nos. 1-3, 1952; and Nos. 10, 12-19, 1957-1961. With a hand-written artist index on 4" x 6" index cards giving artist name, issue number and page number, no indication of author but from the collection of noted folklorist Frank Hoffman. Rupert Hughes was the uncle of Howard Hughes and a prolific novelist, film director, and Oscar-nominated Hollywood screen writer. Will H. Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual… Read More

Various Places: Various A remarkable collection amassed by a single collector from the 1940s-1970s whose original inventory sheet (included) lists 39,744 labels from 49 countries spanning the globe. The countries with the highest counts include Belgium, 8000+, France, 5100+, Spain, 4400+, and Switzerland, 3500+. The collector sent letters requesting their unused labels to wineries, breweries and distilleries. Consequently, almost all are unused and most are stored in the original contemporary return envelopes, with a count and sometimes a country on the outside for each envelope. A good number of duplicates and variants noted. Total inventory numbers not verified, although a good representative sampling of envelope counts confirms the accuracy of the count. Various Photographers , 1930. A group of 32 photographs, 30 b&w and 2 color, ranging in size from 4" x 6" to 7" x 9 1/2", 10 circa 1930's, the rest 1957-1997, 8 SIGNED ( signees to be determined). Credited photographers are: Ginger Gamage, Forbes, Jay Dee (Ft. Worth, TX), V. Sladon, (NYC), and John Lindquist. Some of the photos have writing verso identifying the subjects, including one of Svetlova with Claudio Arrau and Mantovani. Several appear to be other noted people in the world of dance. And the 1930's photos, several of which are signed, appear to be friends of Svetlovas. Marina Svetlova ( 1923-2009) had a carrer in ballet that began as a child in 1931 and carried into the 1960's. She was a soloist with the Original Ballet Russe and a ballerina with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. 1946-1998: Various Publishers An important collection of 14 separately titled items, 7 books and 7 offprints, spanning the years 1946-1998, all SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Robert K. Merton (RKM) to his former student, friend, colleague and noted sociologist Thomas Gieryn. Robert K. Merton is considered to be a founding father of modern sociology and the founder of the sociology of science. In 1994 he became the first sociologist awarded the National Medal of Science. His contributions to the field include such ideas as focus groups, role models, self-fulfilling and self-defeating prophecy, reference groups, and unintended consequences. Soviet Union , 1979. Dated 1979-1982, a unique and RARE Soviet sailor's photo album, 13 1/2" w x 9" h, in string-tied brown velvet over heavy cardboard. Containing 40 pp. of thick cardboard, with 140 black and white and 4 color photographs pasted in, and 4 B & W photos and 1 negative laid in. The album rendered unique and amazing by the addition of 15 exquisitely detailed SIGNED pen and ink tracings of warships, 11 modern Soviet Navy warships and 4 tall ships, on rice paper, with each tracing interspersed between the photography pages. Very Good, small tears to the edges of some of the rice paper sheets. RARE Soviet Navy photographs from the height of the Cold War taken by an incredibly talented sailor/ artist. . Photograph Album.
