Description:
Danbury, NH: Addison House, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. Ten poems by Cavafy paired with ten captioned black-and-white photographs by Michals placed on the following pages. The work is homoerotic, with many of the photographs incorporating male nudes. Michals explains the intent of the book in his short introduction: "Because [Cavafy] was a man who loved other men, he demonstrated his courage by making public these private passions. He lived then, as we still do today, among those brute people who would literally destroy him both physically and spiritually for the unforgivable sin of loving the wrong person." Michals would return to pairing his photographs with Cavafy's poems in books published by the Limited Editions Club (2003) and Twin Palms (2007).
