Corners of book and jacket bumped; jacket a little worn at ends of spine panel and with a tiny tear at head of rear panel and a minuscule chip to upper corner of front panel; still a nice, bright copy. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the verso of the frontispiece. It reads: "To Eleanor Schoberlin -- This, the oldest love tale that has come down to us in our Western literatures (for of Troy's Helen we know only the name, of her love-story nothing) a tale burning with the sun of the desert Mâqedâ crossed to find the King of her Heart, before the oldest tomb was hewn in rose-red Petra. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, [1948]. 154 pages. Numerous black & white photographs printed with the text; maps on endpapers. Original cloth. [24 cm.] A near fine copy in a very good or better dust jacket. Book has slightest rubbing to spine ends and minor dust soil to top edge. Spine panel of dust jacket is a little sunned and shows tiny (half centimeter) chips at ends, not affecting lettering. Else a bright, attractive copy. FIRST EDITION. A survey of South African society, including much on traditional Zulu culture. The author was an Italian explorer, who wrote numerous books on sub-Saharan Africa and made documentary films of the region.
