Description:
Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1884. 4to. [8], 40 pages, including half-title, plus color frontispiece portrait and six full-page engraved plates. Original olive-green cloth over beveled boards, stamped in gilt and black; top edge gilt; yellow-coated endpapers. [28.7 cm.] Very good. Light soiling to covers; very light foxing to prelims and final plate (bound after the last page of text); still a respectable copy. FIRST OF THIS ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Copies in the original cloth are a bit scarce; the work is more often found in printed paper-covered boards. The text was originally printed as an article in the "North British Review" (Nov. 1863), and several separate editions followed. The frontispiece portrait is a reproduction of a watercolor, presumed to be the work of Miss Isabella Keith, who was Marjorie's adored, teenage cousin. The other six plates reproduce pencil sketches by Warwick Brookes (1808-1882) of Manchester, who drew them for the author. Marjorie (or Marjory) Fleming… Read More

New York: Robert O. Ballou, [1933]. 341 pages. 90 full-page, hand-pulled photogravures (including the frontispiece, all reckoned in the pagination). Lacking the extra, laid-in photogravure, being a duplicate of one of the images in the book, that is found with most copies. Early full vellum with gilt spine and cover lettering and gilt centerpiece on the front cover. 29 x 22 cm. Near fine. The photogravures are all in excellent condition. The text shows some very faint offsetting from the plates throughout, and a half dozen or so of the text pages show moderate foxing. Tissue guards, laid-in throughout, appear to be recent replacements. Housed in a plain linen slipcase, evidently of the same vintage as the binding. FIRST EDITION. #44 of 350 COPIES SIGNED BY JULIA PETERKIN AND DORIS ULMANN. One of the most celebrated American photobooks, “Roll, Jordan Roll “provides a stunning portrait of rural African American life in the low country of South Carolina. Tampa, Fla.: Tribune Press, 1943. [104] pages. Original illustrated glossy wraps. 23 x 15 cm. Foxing to spine, light soiling to covers. Small scrape to base of title page; internally clean. Very good. FIRST EDITION. A collection of editorial cartoons about World War II reprinted from the Tampa “Morning Tribune.“ George Robert White (1901-1964) worked for the “Tribune“ from 1934 to 1964 and his cartoons were always featured on the front page. Approximately half of the cartoons in the book are from the period before U.S. entry into the war and present dire warnings about the growing militarization and territorial expansion of the Axis nations and the folly of American disengagement. The remainder of the cartoons celebrate Allied military victories and promote the U.S. war effort. Typical of prevailing American wartime prejudices, White depicts the Japanese with racist caricatures throughout the volume. Scarce.
