Jacket shows sunning to spine panel, a few tiny chips and tears, and light soiling. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, using the sheets of the English original. Dobbs was governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1764, a period coinciding with the French and Indian War.

Bookplate on front pastedown. FIRST EDITION. Harris (1892-1973), a native of Wake County, North Carolina, and a graduate of Meredith College, wrote a number of novels portraying life in her native area. "Bernice Kelly Harris belongs with those novelists, who, through a series of works, present a time and place and way so skillfully that the total of the books conveys a social history of the age and the geographical section." --p. 52.

Savannah, Ga.: Printed for the [Georgia Historical] Society, [by] Townsend, Printer and Binder, 1888. 25 pages. Original printed pale green wraps with cover title reading: "Sidney Lanier." [24 cm.] Good plus. Tiny chips to spine ends, short closed tear and minor crease at base of front wrap. Front free endpaper has three very short tears due to slightly rough opening, but its conjugate, the titie leaf, is unharmed and the pamphlet is otherwise unopened. Excepting a sliver of foxing to base of one leaf, the interior is clean and bright. A nicer than usual copy. FIRST EDITION. Charles Nephew West (1844-1900) was, like Sidney Lanier, a native of Macon, Georgia and a Confederate veteran. He was an attorney and an active member of the Georgia Historical Society. He also published "The Life and Times of William Harris Crawford" (1892). BAL (Lanier) vol. 5, p. 296.

Raleigh: Edwards & Broughton Print. Co., 1909. 209 pages. Original dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and rules on spine. [19.3 cm.] Near fine. Spine ends just a trifle rubbed. Light tanning to endpapers appears to have been caused by contact with dust jacket, but none is present. Neat name (J. Tolbert) on front free endpaper. FIRST EDITION. Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781) was one of the most prominent leaders of the Revolutionary cause in North Carolina, who served in the Continental Congress from 1777-1779. The author, Robert Digges Wimberly Connor (1878-1950), was a professor of history of at the University of North Carolina, secretary of the North Carolina Historical Commission, and the first Archivist of the United States (1934-1941). [Durham: Press of the Seeman Printery, 1920.] 229 pages, plus frontispiece and 11 full page plates from photographs. Most of the plates are portraits with the remainder depicting Durham businesses. Original maroon cloth lettered in gilt. 20.5 x 14 cm. The cloth shows light speckling along the edges of the boards and spine; spine is just a little faded. Margins of some of the plates and facing pages show minor foxing, not affecting images or text. Several leaves with a tiny marginal pinhole (signs of a prior enclosure). Still, a very good, tight copy of a work that is seldom found thus. FIRST EDITION. John Merrick (1859-1919) was one of the leading figures of Durham's "Black Wall Street" in the early 20th century. Born a slave in Sampson County, he worked as a brick mason and then a barber before founding the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1898. The front free endpaper is printed with a copyright notice on the recto and prior appearance notice on verso. Original olive-green cloth with gilt spine lettering. 20 x 15 cm. There was a variant in blue cloth, priority unknown. A good copy in good plus dust jacket. Moderate stains to both covers along and near the joints. The binding is a bit fragile internally (cracked between most gatherings), however, all contents are holding well (stitching is intact) and the hinges are sound. Foxing to the pages facing the plates, but only faint marginal foxing to the plates themselves. Jacket shows tiny tears to the head of the spine panel and upper corners, a short (2 cm) closed tear at the bottom of the front hinge, and a pinhead-sized hole near the top of the spine panel. Contemporary half dark blue morocco by Bumpus of Oxford Street (London), with raised bands and gilt tooling on spine, single gilt rules on covers, and top edge gilt. Penciled ownership inscription of North Carolina collector, Forster A. Sondley, on the front flyleaf. Tasteful bookplate of Sondley Reference Library and gilt manuscript call number on front pastedown. Ink stamp on front free endpaper, verso of title, and in margin of one other page. [23.5 cm.] A very good plus copy in about very good dust jacket. Book is slightly bumped on corners and shows some faint marginal foxing to plates and facing pages. Jacket is sunned (unevenly on front and rear panels) and has tiny tear to hinge between spine and rear panels. FIRST EDITION. Recounts Stevenson's honeymoon in Napa Valley, California, a journey which served as the basis for his book, "The Silverado Squatters."

Slight bump to head of spine; book is otherwise fine. Jacket has bump at head of spine panel and a short tear where the spine panel meets the front panel, the latter repaired with archival tape on the verso. FIRST EDITION. Mabel Wolfe Wheaton was Thomas Wolfe's sister. This account was assembled by Legette Blythe from Mabel's written notes and tape recordings.

Frontispiece and 47 full pages plates (of 48 called for), mostly portraits and a few views. This copy was bound without the portrait plate of Chauncey M. Depew. Original dark green, gilt-stamped cloth. 23.5 x 16 cm. Embossed binder's stamp of E. Walker's Son, Brooklyn and New York, on the rear flyleaf. Light rubbing to extremities, very slight rippling to the spine, a few tiny spots and some light soiling to cloth. Hinges are intact and the binding of this large, heavy volume is sound. Text leaves are tanned throughout. A few minor traces of marginal foxing. Good plus. Early printing. The title page of the scarce first printing is dated 1887. Original cloth (dark blue on spines, tan with red stripe on covers), stamped in gilt on spines. Top edges stained red; fore and bottom edges untrimmed. [23.7 cm.] Bright and near fine in very good publisher's cardboard slipcase. Also issued with glassine dustjackets, not present. Small bookseller's ticket at base of front pastedown in each volume, with minimal impact on illustration; short marginal tears to lower corners of two leaves, in no way affecting text; still a nice, clean set. Slipcase shows a small amount of wear and a mark to the paper label, but is sound. FIRST EDITION. A history of Virginia told in a series of biographical sketches of prominent figures.

Greensboro, N.C.: Piedmont Press, 1963. 401 pages, plus frontispiece and four leaves of plates. Original black cloth. [23.3 cm.] A near fine copy in very good dust jacket. Faint foxing to title page and a few other pages (due to contact with plates), still a nice copy. Jacket shows some light rubbing and two minuscule tears, with no loss. FIRST EDITION. WARM PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the front free endpaper. TWO AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, laid-in. The inscription and both letters are addressed to Tempie Harris Prince, of High Rock Farm, Rockingham County, North Carolina, whose pictorial bookplate appears on the front pastedown. William Swaim was editor of the Greensboro "Patriot" from 1829-1835, where he promoted the manumission of slaves and various reforms. He was the maternal grandfather of William Sydney Porter, a.k.a. O'Henry.

Several short creases at base of spine and several tiny nicks to fore-edge; apparently minor errors by the binder. A few minor traces of soil to wraps; trifling bump to lower corner of front wrap and first few leaves. FIRST EDITION. There does not appear to have been an English translation.
