[10] pages publisher's illustrated ads (Livermore & Rudd) including a full-page ad for the present work. Illustrated with title page vignette and woodcuts in the text. Original embossed dark blue cloth stamped in gilt on the spine. 20 x 14 cm. Extremities worn, moderate soiling to the cloth, spine cocked, but sound and with hinges intact. Scattered foxing, heavy in a few places; several leaves with shallow chips to fore-edge; one closed marginal tear; several corners creased. Good only, but scarce in any condition. FIRST EDITION, New York issue. Perhaps preceded by a Cincinnati issue with Moore, et al. listed first in the imprint, although we can find no direct evidence as to priority. [10] pages publisher's illustrated ads (Livermore & Rudd) including a full-page ad for the present work. Illustrated with title page vignette and woodcuts in the text. Original embossed red cloth stamped in gilt on the spine. 20 x 14 cm. Tiny tears to head of spine, the base of spine chipped to the text block, shallow gouge to the bottom edge of front board, tiny hole on the rear joint, but sound. A few stains to cloth including dark spotting along the joints. Sporadic moderate foxing; occasional, mostly marginal stains with a few spots to the text not affecting legiblity; light tanning to several pages due to prior enclosures. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, [1919]. [4], 123 pages. Numerous drawings in the text by Fontaine Fox, who also illustrated the covers. Original paper-covered boards printed in red and black. 19.5 x 13 cm. Slight loss to the paper covering the rear joint from insect nibbling, else very good. Light wear to the spine ends with one letter of publisher's name rubbed away, spine a little sunned, slight browning to ends of spine and edges of covers, tiny split to one corner. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper, faint foxing to endpapers. Text leaves are a little toned, as expected, but clean. An attractive copy overall.FIRST EDITION. A collection of stories told as letters by a Chicago policeman, Fred A. Gross, to his brother Charley. Fred's epistles deal little with his professional life and instead "focus on efforts to get along with his middle-class neighbors in a Chicago suburb and his attempts to move up in society" (ANB). Original embossed brick red cloth with title and decorations in gilt on the spine. 16 x 10.5 cm. Ex-Sondley Reference Library with light internal markings: tasteful bookplate on front pastedown, embossed stamp on frontispiece, title, and one other leaf, and ink number stamp on verso of title and in the margin of one other page. Else fair only, but uncommon in any condition. Spine ends chipped and frayed, corners worn, spine faded to tan. Sporadic but sometimes heavy foxing and staining, affecting some text and images with no loss of legibility; two short marginal tears; lacking rear free endpapers.
