Top edge stained red. [22.3 cm.] A bright, very nearly fine copy in dust jacket with small chips to head of spine panel slightly affecting two letters of title and several internal repairs with archival tape. Jacket otherwise in very good or better condition. Book shows slightest rubbing. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's reply card (offering free illustrated booklet about the present work) laid-in.

Durham, N.C.: Duke University, Center for International Studies, 1987. xiii, [1], 142 pages. Original printed wraps. [22.7 cm.] Very good. Wraps a bit sun-faded, especially on spine; minor foxing to top edge; internally clean. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY PHELPS, dated in the year of publication, on the title page. It is addressed to Doug O'Dell, who was the proprietor of Chapel Hill Rare Books in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While the inscription is unsigned, the handwriting is identical to another item in my inventory that was signed by Phelps on the same date. The papers in this collection were written for a symposium held in honor of Phelps on the occasion of his retirement from Duke University, where he was a longtime professor of German. Phelps was also a pioneer in the use of computers in foreign language education. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. Issued as no. 665 of Harper's Franklin Square Library, New Series. 281 pages, plus [2] pages ads, lacking the final [4] pages of ads. 20.5 x 14.5 cm. Original printed wraps, lacking the rear wrap. Else good only. The spine is chipped and fragile, but holding and with most lettering intact; small chips to front wrap, not affecting lettering; stains and browning to front wrap. Upper corners a little bumped; occasional light marginal soiling; faint marginal scratches to one page; faint offsetting to two other pages. Early bookseller's ink stamp on front flyleaf (Kleinteich's, Brooklyn). Housed in custom-made cloth folder and quarter red morocco slipcase with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine.
