Description:
[Middlebury, Vt.: Middlebury College Press, 1935]. 4 pages. Original printed blue wraps. [22.4 cm.] Near very good. Wraps a bit faded and with some minor soiling. Leaves slightly toned and with some faint traces of foxing or soiling. FIRST EDITION. An address delivered while Allen was serving as a member of the faculty of the Bread Loaf School of English, a summer graduate program at Middlebury College, Vermont. Allen also participated in the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. In this address, he discusses the "Bread Loaf idea," which he describes, in part: "The idea that literature, that writing, is a constant state of becoming, that it went on in the past, that it continues now, and that it stretches into an almost but yet not entirely unpredictable future." --p. 3. Description:
Boston: Printed and published, under the patronage of the Company, by E.G. House, a member, 1820. 8vo (signed in fours). 199 pages. Original quarter orange paper over grey paper covered boards with printed paper spine label. [24 cm.] Spine cracked in several places with the text block holding by cords. It is holding well enough that the book is serviceable for reading as is, although a sympathetic backing is probably desirable. Spine also shows some chips, with some loss to the printed label. Boards soiled and with a faint notation on the front board; wear to all corners; and bend to the front board. Some chips, tears, and browning to the endpapers. Internally very good with occasional foxing only, most evident on the first page of text (see photo); some soiling to p. 158 not affecting legibiltiy; and a closed, marginal tear to pp. 121-122 in no way affecting the text. Faint pencilled name of P.R.L. Stone, a Boston merchant who dealt in West India goods, on front flyleaf. FIRST EDITION.… Read More

[Sandusky, Ohio: Published by the author; printed by the Franklin Printing & Engraving co., Toledo, 1916.] 16 pages. Original printed wraps. [26.5 cm.] Good plus. Short tear to front wrap affecting two letters of subtitle, short tear to base of spine, some soiling and creasing to wraps. Internally clean. FIRST EDITION. Scarce. The second and last "Pomeroy Pamphlet," the first having been issued the previous year. In 1912, Albert A. Pomeroy issued the first volume of his book, "The History and Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family." In Jan., 1914, an article appeared in "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register" ("Genealogical Research in England," by Elizabeth French, pp. 47-64), which undermined the pedigree of Eltweed Pomeroy that Albert Pomeroy put forth in his book. Furthermore, an editor at the "Register," J. Gardner Bartlett, appended a note to the article (pp. 55-56) which attacked Pomeroy's use of evidence in his book.… Read More
