Expounding on the virtues that make a great attorney, Reade discusses some of the eminent jurists he knew, including George E. Badger, William A. Graham, Judge Mangum, and Justice Ruffin. His prefatory remarks allude to women in attendance, and he recalls his experience of giving the examination to the first woman to apply to the North Carolina bar (Tabitha Ann Holton, admitted 1878). Light rubbing to spine ends, minor foxing to endpapers, light offsetting to four pages from clippings. Jacket has chip to head of spine panel, not affecting lettering, a few other small chips, several tears with internal repairs, small scuff to rear panel affecting several letters of text (easily inferred from context), sun-darkening to spine panel, and small stain to front panel. Scarce with the jacket in any condition. Third edition, but the first from this press. The first two editions (1918, 1920) appear to have been self-published as well and were printed by the Appeals Press, Richmond. Stories of the North Carolina mountains. Joseph Medley Rowland (1886-1938), a native of North Carolina, became a preacher in Lynchburg and Richmond, Virginia, and published several books.

SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper. Established in 1891 as a women's college focused on teacher training, the school became co-educational and was given its present name in 1963. The author, Allen W. Trelease (d. 2011), was a professor of history at UNC-G and the chair of the history department (1984-1992).

Light tanning to endpapers appears to have been caused by contact with dust jacket, but none is present. Neat name (J. Tolbert) on front free endpaper. FIRST EDITION. Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781) was one of the most prominent leaders of the Revolutionary cause in North Carolina, who served in the Continental Congress from 1777-1779. The author, Robert Digges Wimberly Connor (1878-1950), was a professor of history of at the University of North Carolina, secretary of the North Carolina Historical Commission, and the first Archivist of the United States (1934-1941). Continuously paginated: 540 pages, plus four plates in one issue and several pages of advertisements at the end of each number. Original printed wraps with each rear wrap bearing a college directory on the verso and information on the college and the magazine on the recto. Nos. 1-7 measure approx. 23 x 15 cm; no. 8 measures 24 x 15.5 cm. Wraps show creasing and chipping to the wrap edges, some marginal browning, a chip to one spine with loss of the date, several tears (including a long, closed tear to the front wrap of one issue), and some moderate foxing and soiling. The final number has heavy stains to the rear wrap. Spine is partially faded, gilt is a bit dull, some spotting to the spine and covers, name on front free endpaper. Leaves are just a little toned, but clean. FIRST EDITION. The book is in two parts, with Arnold Lloyd Fletcher writing the history of the American Legion and his wife, Mae Pitzer Fletcher, providing the account of the work of ladies in the American Legion Auxillary. Each provides sketches of individual posts/units in addition to a history of the larger organization. One of Mr. Fletcher's chapters provides a brief discussion of the "Negro Posts of North Carolina" (pp. 194-197).

Original maroon cloth lettered in gilt. 20.5 x 14 cm. The cloth shows light speckling along the edges of the boards and spine; spine is just a little faded. Margins of some of the plates and facing pages show minor foxing, not affecting images or text. Several leaves with a tiny marginal pinhole (signs of a prior enclosure). The cloth is a little faded and shows some faint stains; endpapers are browned. Moderate scattered foxing; leaves browned along the edges. Good plus. Penciled owner's inscription, "B.F. Crosland, New York, 1857," on front flyleaf. This was perhaps Benjamin Franklin Crosland (1826-1899), merchant and hotelier of Salem. FIRST EDITION. A history of the Moravians in North Carolina from the founding of Salem in 1752 to the time of publication. There are chapters on the Cherokee War (1759), the Revolutionary War, the founding of the Salem Female Academy, and the commencement of the Indian and Negro missions (in 1801 and 1822, respectively), plus lists of ministers, teachers, early settlers, and historic buildings. N.Y.: Greely & McElrath, Tribune Office, [1844. Imprint at base of p. [1].] 12 pages. Self-wraps; stab-stitched (perhaps added). 22 x 13.5 cm. Removed from a bound volume. Small paper remnant on the gutter of the first page (from later plain wraps, removed and retained). Else good only. Short closed tear to first and final leaves, affecting one word with no loss; scattered foxing and soiling; tiny hole to margin of one leaf. Provenance: Small printed bookplate of Joseph Keith Newell (1837-1895), Springfield, Mass., who served in the Civil War as a captain of Co. I, 10th Massachusetts. He later wrote the regimental history, “Ours:” Annals of the 10th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers (1875) and was a merchant and councilman in his native city. Raleigh, N.C.: Edwards, Broughton, & Co., [1881 or 1882]. 63 pages. Ads included in pagination (pp. 59-63). Original printed wraps. 23 x 15 cm. Spine chipped and showing light evidence of glue repair, front wrap nearly detached, a number of shallow chips to wraps not affecting printed matter. A few corners creased or chipped. Fair to good only. Second edition. We have also seen the first edition of this number. The main body of the text appears to be the same in both editions, however, the second edition has some changes in layout and fewer adds. While the first edition was almost certainly printed in 1881, demand for the second edition may not have arisen until the new year.
