The topic of Reade’s address is "The Legal Profession of North Carolina -- What It is and What It Ought to Be." Expounding on the virtues that make a great attorney, Reade discusses some of the eminent jurists he knew, including George E. Badger, William A. Graham, Judge Mangum, and Justice Ruffin. His prefatory remarks allude to women in attendance, and he recalls his experience of giving the examination to the first woman to apply to the North Carolina bar (Tabitha Ann Holton, admitted 1878). Jacket shows sunning to spine panel, a few tiny chips and tears, and light soiling. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, using the sheets of the English original. Dobbs was governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1764, a period coinciding with the French and Indian War.

Harris (1892-1973), a native of Wake County, North Carolina, and a graduate of Meredith College, wrote a number of novels portraying life in her native area. "Bernice Kelly Harris belongs with those novelists, who, through a series of works, present a time and place and way so skillfully that the total of the books conveys a social history of the age and the geographical section." --p. 52.

Light rubbing to spine ends, minor foxing to endpapers, light offsetting to four pages from clippings. Jacket has chip to head of spine panel, not affecting lettering, a few other small chips, several tears with internal repairs, small scuff to rear panel affecting several letters of text (easily inferred from context), sun-darkening to spine panel, and small stain to front panel. Scarce with the jacket in any condition. Third edition, but the first from this press. The first two editions (1918, 1920) appear to have been self-published as well and were printed by the Appeals Press, Richmond. Stories of the North Carolina mountains. Joseph Medley Rowland (1886-1938), a native of North Carolina, became a preacher in Lynchburg and Richmond, Virginia, and published several books.

Marbled paper is used for pastedowns and facing free endpapers in the place of endpaper maps, which are instead bound as free endpapers, front and rear. [22.2 cm.] A fine copy. Fourth edition, revised and with a new preface by Malcolm Ross. "An intimate portrait of the hill people of the Toe River Valley." --Books from Chapel Hill, p. 234.

Fine in very good dust jacket. Jacket shows sun-fading to the spine panel, a slight crease to the base of the spine panel, and some faint rubbing. FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper. Established in 1891 as a women's college focused on teacher training, the school became co-educational and was given its present name in 1963. The author, Allen W. Trelease (d. 2011), was a professor of history at UNC-G and the chair of the history department (1984-1992).

Original printed self-wraps; stapled as issued. 23 x 15 cm. Good plus. A few small spots and slight toning to wraps; some light marginal creasing. FIRST EDITION. Laid-in is a one-page printed circular letter, signed (in type) by the governor and secretary of state. The pamphlet contains the text of the existing state constitution and an act proposing four constitutional amendments that were to be submitted to the people for their approval, together with directions for administering the ballot. The amendments provided for prohibiting the General Assembly from enacting certain local, private, and special legislation; providing for special or emergency judges to prevent delays in trials; and prohibiting the General Assembly from granting special charters to corporations or towns. Light tanning to endpapers appears to have been caused by contact with dust jacket, but none is present. Neat name (J. Tolbert) on front free endpaper. FIRST EDITION. Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781) was one of the most prominent leaders of the Revolutionary cause in North Carolina, who served in the Continental Congress from 1777-1779. The author, Robert Digges Wimberly Connor (1878-1950), was a professor of history of at the University of North Carolina, secretary of the North Carolina Historical Commission, and the first Archivist of the United States (1934-1941). [Davidson, N.C.:] Philanthropic and Eumenean Societies of Davidson, North Carolina, 1907 -1908. Continuously paginated: 540 pages, plus four plates in one issue and several pages of advertisements at the end of each number. Original printed wraps with each rear wrap bearing a college directory on the verso and information on the college and the magazine on the recto. Nos. 1-7 measure approx. 23 x 15 cm; no. 8 measures 24 x 15.5 cm. Wraps show creasing and chipping to the wrap edges, some marginal browning, a chip to one spine with loss of the date, several tears (including a long, closed tear to the front wrap of one issue), and some moderate foxing and soiling. The final number has heavy stains to the rear wrap. Interiors are generally in nice condition with only a few minor spots of foxing and with the first issue showing light crinkling to the lower third of the leaves. A good set overall. Otherwise near very good. Faint foxing to front wrap; moderate, mostly marginal foxing to first text leaf; a few light traces elsewhere. Leaves a little age-toned. Some very slight evidence of marginal damping. Two leaves with light creases. Second edition overall, but the FIRST CONFEDERATE EDITION. The true first edition was issued in Raleigh in 1859. A fine copy in very nearly fine dust jacket (minor rubbing to the jacket). FIRST EDITION. The first chapter discusses private academies in the 18th and 19th centuries and the first efforts to establish public schools. The remainder of the book is an account of the growth and administration of the public school system from 1885 to the time of publication. John E. Batchelor was himself a teacher and administrator in the Guilford County Schools. He has since worked as a consultant on school improvement and written several books including: "Race and Education in North Carolina: From Segregation to Desegregation" (2015).

Original blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and gilt emblems on the front cover. 23.5 x 16.5 cm. Good. Spine is partially faded, gilt is a bit dull, some spotting to the spine and covers, name on front free endpaper. Leaves are just a little toned, but clean. FIRST EDITION. The book is in two parts, with Arnold Lloyd Fletcher writing the history of the American Legion and his wife, Mae Pitzer Fletcher, providing the account of the work of ladies in the American Legion Auxillary. Each provides sketches of individual posts/units in addition to a history of the larger organization. One of Mr. Fletcher's chapters provides a brief discussion of the "Negro Posts of North Carolina" (pp. 194-197).

[Durham: Press of the Seeman Printery, 1920.] 229 pages, plus frontispiece and 11 full page plates from photographs. Most of the plates are portraits with the remainder depicting Durham businesses. Original maroon cloth lettered in gilt. 20.5 x 14 cm. The cloth shows light speckling along the edges of the boards and spine; spine is just a little faded. Margins of some of the plates and facing pages show minor foxing, not affecting images or text. Several leaves with a tiny marginal pinhole (signs of a prior enclosure). Still, a very good, tight copy of a work that is seldom found thus. FIRST EDITION. John Merrick (1859-1919) was one of the leading figures of Durham's "Black Wall Street" in the early 20th century. The binding is a bit fragile internally (cracked between most gatherings), however, all contents are holding well (stitching is intact) and the hinges are sound. Foxing to the pages facing the plates, but only faint marginal foxing to the plates themselves. Jacket shows tiny tears to the head of the spine panel and upper corners, a short (2 cm) closed tear at the bottom of the front hinge, and a pinhead-sized hole near the top of the spine panel. Crosland, New York, 1857," on front flyleaf. This was perhaps Benjamin Franklin Crosland (1826-1899), merchant and hotelier of Salem. FIRST EDITION. A history of the Moravians in North Carolina from the founding of Salem in 1752 to the time of publication. There are chapters on the Cherokee War (1759), the Revolutionary War, the founding of the Salem Female Academy, and the commencement of the Indian and Negro missions (in 1801 and 1822, respectively), plus lists of ministers, teachers, early settlers, and historic buildings. Fair to good only. Second edition. We have also seen the first edition of this number. The main body of the text appears to be the same in both editions, however, the second edition has some changes in layout and fewer adds. While the first edition was almost certainly printed in 1881, demand for the second edition may not have arisen until the new year.
