Original dark green cloth, stamped in gold, with a color illustration mounted on the front cover. [23 cm.] Tasteful bookplate on front pastedown, else near fine. Lacks the rare dust jacket. Minor evidence of rubbing, tiny area of light speckling to front board, still a nice copy. FIRST EDITION. Ernest Peixotto (18691940) was a noted American artist and illustrator. During World War I, he served as a captain in charge of a group of painters appointed by the U.S. Army to depict the war.

New Haven: Yale University Press, [printed at the Earl Trumbull Williams Memorial], 1923. [10] pages. Original blue boards with silver cover lettering. [23.9 cm.] Very good plus in very good dust jacket. Tanning to free endpapers, rear hinge started, but sound, otherwise a nice copy. Jacket has small tape-repaired tear at head of front panel and several tiny chips. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. A poem set during the First World War. Allen fought in the Aisne-Marne campaign of 1918. The poem was originally printed in the North American review in 1919 and also appeared in the author's second book, "Wampum and Old Gold" (1921). As is discussed on the rear panel of the dust jacket, "The Blindman" was commemorated by the Poetry Society of South Carolina with an annual prize of the same name.

Luxeuil: M. Patteguy, [circa early 1930s]. Broadside measuring 112 x 76 cm (44 x 30). Printed on two sheets of roughly equal size, one coated blue-gray, the other coated red, pasted together as issued. Folded with three vertical and seven horizontal creases, and in want of professional flattening. Else good. Small chips and tears at several of the intersections of the folds and to the edges, with minimal impact on lettering; slight toning along some folds. A large poster addressed to the citizens of Luxeuil, France, thanking them for hosting a celebration in commemoration of Franco-American cooperation in World War I and the American volunteer aviators who flew in the Lafayette Escadrille. Original blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and gilt emblems on the front cover. 23.5 x 16.5 cm. Good. Spine is partially faded, gilt is a bit dull, some spotting to the spine and covers, name on front free endpaper. Leaves are just a little toned, but clean. FIRST EDITION. The book is in two parts, with Arnold Lloyd Fletcher writing the history of the American Legion and his wife, Mae Pitzer Fletcher, providing the account of the work of ladies in the American Legion Auxillary. Each provides sketches of individual posts/units in addition to a history of the larger organization. One of Mr. Fletcher's chapters provides a brief discussion of the "Negro Posts of North Carolina" (pp. 194-197).
