About This Item

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1994. First Edition. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. A collection of essays on the history of constraint in the conduct of war in the Western world from classical antiquity to the present, including not only formal treaties but unwritten conventions on what is permissable during military operations. Eminent historians discuss legal and cultural regulations on the rights of belligerents; treatment of prisoners and civilians; truces and immunities; weaponry, including nuclear weapons; codes of honor; and adjudication of war crimes. First Printing, First Edition (with complete numberline). About 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches, 303 pages including notes, suggested readings, and index; bound in grey paper-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. The wrap-around dustjacket illustration reproduces a 16th century print: Execution by the Spanish after the capture of Haarlem (July 13, 1573). A touch of light foxing on fore edge of text, o/w text and boards are clean, complete and unmarked; binding is tight and square. Not remaindered. The dustjacket shows only minimal surface wear and a bit of soiling on edges. No tears, no creasing or chipping, no clipped corners. A collectable copy.
