Skagway: P. E. Kern Gold and Silversmith, 1905. First Edition. Stiff wraps. Good. 16mo. Title page followed by a total of 24 photogravure plates. Gravure-printed cover, blindstamped, featuring a harvest of mountain goats. Binding was with ribbon ties through three holes on spine. Disbound, with wear to extremities of cover, including two-thirds separation at spine. Striking photos presented with great clarity. Gravures created by Albertype Co., Brooklyn, depicting Images of Northwest Coast artifacts, mining subjects, and views of Alaska cities, including Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, White Pass, etc. Peter Kern was of Swiss background; after apprenticing in the jewelry business and working in the Midwest, he struck out for El Paso, where he acquired land. In the late 1890s he joined the gold rush, then set up shop as a jeweller in Skagway. By 1910 he returned to El Paso.
