The drawings range from 2.5*4 inches to 10* 7.75 inches, Folio. Each drawing elaborately matted and bound into an imposing dark green straight grain morocco album, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind on upper and lower covers, panelled spine gilt with emblematic devices, all edges gilt, by Riviere, faint rubbing to extremities, else fine, one drawing very slightly foxed. These are superb drawings, most of them feature brilliantly coloured studies of cock and hen pheasants, set against un-coloured pencil backgrounds of woods, moors, and country views; in one case a dog pursues a bird, in another a hunter and his dogs approach a convey of quail. With Twenty Five Bird Plates First editions, 25 pls (1 hand coloured-complete as listed), 3 vols in 2, ie 2 vol dictionary bound as 1, plus the Supplement Volume, in red half morocco over brown marbled boards, some blind tooling. New spines, old laid down, raised bands, gilt tooling, titles in gilt to green calf labels. Internally, Vol 1, 1802, frontis, [2], [1], (ii-xlii), [1], B1-Y2, 1 pl (hand coloured). (Vol 2), 1802, [2], B2-Y8. Supplement Vol, 1813, [3], (iv-vi), [2], B-Ff8, [1] errata, [1] advert, 24 pls (B&W). Both vols with new endpapers, book pl to fep (Oscar Boulton), & fpd of Vol 2, removed bookplate to fpd of Vol 1, margin tear with loss to R8, V1. (199*127 mm). A Very Good + set Vol 2 of the Dictionary contains the Catalogue of the Principal Authors referred to in this work.

In half c1920 morocco, with brown cloth, some decorative blind tooling, corners and edges bumped and rubbed. Spine, blind tooling, titles in gilt to brown calf label, edges rubbed. Internally, B&W frontis, additional engraved titlepage, title page in red and black inks, [4], 9-144 pp, 15 pls (B&W), 56 illustrations (many full page), [4] adverts, not dated but per OCLC 1882, some light damp staining along gutter to margins, just touching text, tape repair to 1 pl. The plates are lovely! (376*292 mm). (Copac & OCLC show 6 copies in UK). (Allibone 1494). Hector Giacomelli, born in Paris on April 1, 1822 and died in Menton on December 1, 1904. He was a French watercolorist, engraver and illustrator, best known for his paintings of birds. See Wiki.
