Tbilisi: Lit. Gruzgiza, 1936 Small quarto, wrappers, 32pp. An program for the opera written by Georgian composer Mikeladze, with stage designs reproduced in full page color by Gamrekeli who also designed the cover. Gamrekeli (1894-1943) was a participant of the avant-garde in the USSR who created many works for the stage and for a time was highly experimental. Although the booklet was published in Tbilisi, it is in Russian language and was distributed in the opera season for 1936 in Moscow. Includes a synopsis of the opera, with photos of all the principals including composer, director and musicians; photo of Gamrekeli is included and a full-page photo portait of National Artist Z.P. Paliashvili. Also included is a four-page announcement of the general auspices under which the opera appeared, called A Decade of Georgian Art, for the 1936-37 season in Moscow. Worldcat finds no copies held in libraries or institutions for this title.

Octavo 17x13 cm., wrappers, 16pp. Superb cover design by Pavel Semenovich Naumov (1884-1942), renowned graphic artist. Hasenclever's play was written in 1916 during the war and staged by Tairov in 1928. A description of the play by Hasenclever, with additional notes by Shenshin for the music, and a six-page essay by Aleksandr Tairov. Photos of the cast are included, with frontispiece portrait of Tairov. OCLC locates one holding worldwide (Harvard). A fine copy.

New York: Dancey-Davis, 1923 Folio 32.5 x 24.5 cm, wrappers, 32pp. Cover design and numerous color illustrations by Serge Sudeikine (Sergei Sudeikin), with work also by Nicolas Remizoff (Nikolai Remizov). Undated. An extravagently conceived announcement for the first tour in New York for 17 months under the auspices of C.Ray Comstock & Morris Guest, it is a fine document of costume and theatre design by two of the preeminent Russian avant-garde artists. Fine except for a small chip off front cover. Rare.

Meyerhold refashioned the play from its original setting in the 1830s to the 1870s. The program is a work of Constructivist design by an unknown artist

He was the first Oscar recipient, honored with the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 1929 ceremony, the only German ever to have won that award. He is best known for his collaborations with F. W. Von Stroheim (1885-1957) was a giant among early film makers, a film star and avant garde, visionary director of the silent era. His masterpiece adaptation of Frank Norris's McTeague titled Greed is considered one of the finest and most important films ever made. After clashes with Hollywood studio bosses over budget and workers' rights issues, Stroheim was banned for life as a director and subsequently became a well-respected character actor, particularly in French cinema. The second book written by Ayn Rand (1905-1982), the later adopted name of Alisa Rozenbaum, and published after she left St. Petersburg for America, Hollywood is also the second of the only two works in her native language (Russian). This volume examines the origins of the Hollywood studios, their rivalries, and prominent producers, directors, and stars. Some wear to the wrappers, otherwise in very good condition. Moscow: Mospoligraf, 1924 Oblong quarto 15x23 cm., wrappers, 6(2)pp. 25000 copies. A prospectus for the Russian showing of the 1924 German film Das Wachfigurenkabinett starring Emil Jannings with Konrad Feidt, Werner Krauss and Olga Belyaeva and directed by Paul Leni and Leo Birinsky. The film was adapted from the eponymous original story by Gustav Meyrinck. Constructivist photomontage cover and decorations. Glavlit 68622; OCLC finds one holding worldwide, at Yale. This copy has slight chipping on front cover.

Moscow-Leningrad: Kinopechat', 1927 Duodecimo 13x8.5 cm, wrappers, 7pp. A French historical drama filmed in 1924 Miracle de loups, based on Henri Dupuis-Mazuel's novel of the same title. It was directed by Raymond Bernard with Jean Emile Vanni-Marcoux in the lead role. Undated publication, but an exemplary poster was designed by the Stenberg brothers in 1927 and the Russian release is assumed to be the same date. The film acquired high plaudits internationally and was considered a French equal to DW Griffith s Birth of a Nation. This little rarity has strong constructivist graphics. Quarto (27x18.5 cm.), original wrappers, 96pp. Vladimir Vasil'evich Bakrylov (1892-1922) was a writer and journalist appointed by Lunacharsky to the Ministry of Public Education and later to the Commissar of state theaters in Petrograd to "liquidate sabatoge" among the actors. He became fascinated by Russian theater history, and in particular an old comedy about the pagan monarch who tries to get the boy to denounce Christianity. It dated back over 300 years and was well known to Russian peasants, soldiers, and factory workers. Bakrylov created his own version, drawing on over nineteen variants of the famous folk play. The present work was Nikolai Tyrsa's first book commission and is a wonderful literary abstract design on both front and rear covers. Tyrsa (1887-1942) was a student of Leon Bakst; he went on to become one of the USSR's greatest children's book illustrators. OCLC locates seven holdings in North America. A near fine copy

Turkin. Includes a two-page written summary with credits. Ivan Moskvin (1874-1946) was a Russian and Soviet actor, theater director, People's Artist of the USSR and recipient of two Stalin prizes. He was noted as a reader, particularly of Chekhov stories. Rare, with no holdings found in worldcat. 750
