Cologne, London, Madrid: Taschen, 1999. Very well illustrated, folio, pp 340, very clean internally, blue cloth with the slightest signs of use, in a very slightly worn and stretched dustwrapper. Tri-lingual text - English, French, German. [Very heavy - postage may have to be increased]. {"One day, Ferdinand Cheval, a French postman, came across a stone at Hauterives near Lyon, and was fascinated by its strange, evocative shape. He spent the next three decades collecting stones, shells, and fossils, and used them to build the Palais ideal. Cheval's palace is one of many works of architectural fantasy in this book, the result of over 20 years' research by celebrated architectural photographer Deidi von Schaewen. Like Cheval, the creators of these extraordinary worlds simply started building, with no rules to guide them and, in most cases, no previous artistic experience. These fantasy palaces, bizarre sanctuaries, and colorful sculpture gardens seldom follow a plan. Often the artists…

Description:
West Byfleet: teNeues, 2002. Well illustrated, small thick octavo, pp 400, very clean internally, upper cover creased, lower cover very slightly creased. [Ever since the birth of architecture the domestic garden has played a key role in defining a home. The large, ostentatious gardens of the nobility, now converted into urban parks, were echoed on a smaller scale by attempts to reproduce a piece of nature and incorporate it into a structured living environment. A series of innovative interpretations of the domestic landscape has led to an enormous range of patios, terraces and gardens, all of which are illustrated here in hundreds of photographs (with floor plans included) that enable the reader to investigate the present-day function and form of these spaces all over the world. With contributions from renowned architects and landscape gardeners, this book serves as a useful introduction to the ideas that have inspired the design of the modern garden and to the forms and materials that have made it…

Paris: Flammarion, 1994. Very well illustrated, quarto, pp 211, very clean internally, blue boards, the binding leaning very slightly, in a good dustwrapper with just very slight signs of use. ["The terraced hillsides, rocky capes, and secluded coves of the French Riviera provide some of the world's most spectacular garden settings, and its delightful climate has drawn legendary figures in the arts, literature, and international society since the eighteenth century. In this beautifully designed volume, Louisa Jones turns her gardening and literary talents to the magnificent gardens of the French Riviera, some beloved by visitors for over a century, but most private and hitherto unphotographed. The author's love of plants and gardening really shines through in the text that weaves history, charming anecdotes, and a detailed description of the gardens and plants featured, from the Rothschild villa to the rustic vigor of a well-tended olive grove. Abundantly illustrated with stunning…

Description:
London: The Architectural Press, 1957. Very well illustrated, small quarto, pp 186, very clean internally, cream boards, a bit marked and age-toned. SCARCE. One of the classic texts. [Yoshida Tetsuro, (1894 - 1956), was a Japanese architect who spread knowledge of Japans architecture to the West and at the same time introduced Western motifs in his own works. While on a visit to Europe during 1931-32, Yoshida met the German architects Hugo Haring and Ludwig Hilberseimer. At their urging, he wrote a book, The Japanese House (1935), explaining Japanese architecture to the West. Two other books, one on Japanese architecture and this one were published in 1952 and 1957y. Yoshidas interest in Western architecture is reflected in his own works, such as the post office at Kyoto (1922), the town hall at Beppu (1928), the general post offices at Tokyo (1931) and Osaka (1939), and a bank at Niigata (1951).. First British edition. Boards. Good.
