[A beautifully written Japanese soldier’s memoir of the North Borneo tragedy of 1945, An End to a War tells the story of Ueno Itsuyoshi, a late draftee into the Japanese Army in World War II. Ueno and his fellow soldiers came to Borneo expecting to fight and die for the Emperor, but instead most died of exhaustion, starvation and disease. Illustrated with a frontispiece and nine plates, octavo, pp (4), 99, slightly used internally, green cloth, very slightly worn, the fore-edge of both covers a little stained. A red stamp on the front endpaper shows that this was a second world war gift of the British Red Cross Society; a further stamp shows that it ended up at Oflag VI-B, a World War II German prisoner-of-war camp for officers (Offizerlager), 1 km (0.6 mi) southwest of the village of Dussel (now part of Warburg) in northwestern Germany. The camp was the setting for two remarkable escape attempts. Also with the pencil signature of Lt. M. Lindley, December 1941. RARE. . First Edition. Cloth. Good.

[The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland, and was a diverse, but major, collection of herbals, archaeology and anthropology.
