Vernon-Harcourt -- apparently a junior member of an aristocratic family -- was born in Edinburgh Castle, witnessed Louis Napoleon's coup in France in 1850 (aged 5), ran away to sea, joined the US army, was arrested as a spy and sentenced to death, became an actor, killed a man in a political brawl, became secretary to Christian Mission and carried the Bible into battle in the Boer War. He produced two works of fiction: The Devil's Derelicts and Bolts and Bars (both 1905). Some of the crime stories in Bolts and Bars can be found in serial version in The Sunday Strand (qv).
