Description:
Near Fine; a couple of small tears at front bottom of dust jacket, some tanning of dust jacket spine and top edge and a little soiling on back; volume itself in near fine/fine condition except for a few very small stains on front page edges.. A hard-to-find first edition of Rubinstein's classic investigation into the mechanisms and strategists used by the Medici to maintain control and authority in a milieu where they had no more formal power or authority than other citizens. Based on hitherto unresearched archival material, Rubinstein goes far beyond the typical histories of Medici personalities to illustrate the complex workings of Florentine society, its electoral processes, governance and constitution, as well as the opposition to the Medici and the eventual fall of the regime.

All bindings tight, all pages bright and unmarked; interior of all volumes in fine condition. Bears bookplate of Prof. K.M. Setton (1914-1995) of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study. This is a very good copy of Sabbadini's exhaustive and hard-to-find edition of the famous epistolary of Guarino da Verona (Guarino Veronese, also Guarino Guarini) (1374-1460). Guarino left relatively little written work as he was primarily a teacher (and an evidently inspiring one), but he was extremely influential in establishing the groundwork and the ethos of the Italian Renaissance, and one of the most prominent early Renaissance humanists. His written legacy consists chiefly of this large collection of letters,…

339 pages. Very good +, with a little tanning of spine; binding is tight, all pages clear, unmarked and pristine. Inscription by Prof. Zupko to the former owner, Prof. Kenneth M. Setton of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study; flyleaf bears his ownership stamp.Prof. Zupko is an acknowledged expert in historical metrology and the development of measurement systems from the medieval period to modern times. In Italy, standardization of measures developed very late (really not until "unification"), and as a result a multiplicity of systems and metrics prevailed for centuries; Prof. Zupko presents a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of these, and discusses their development in different Italian regions and spheres of influence and control.

Description:
Book condition would be Near Fine, save for a little foxing on top page edges, and slight bumping at heel of spine. Spine of dust jacket is tanned, and there are a couple of very small tears on the back of it, as well as a tiny chip out of it at back of head of spine. Binding itself is tight, solid and straight. All pages bright, clean and unmarked.Prof. Martines broke new ground with this book, describing the social, political, financial, familial and civic circumstances and backgrounds of prominent Florentine humanists, as well as how they were regarded by other prominent Florentines of the time. From exhaustive research in the manuscripts of the Archivio di Stato, he has shown that fewer of the leaders of humanistic endeavor relied on outside patronage that had been supposed; he also shows the principal taxpaying families of Florence during the earlier Quattrocento.
