She was also known for donating large portions of her earnings to funding charitable endeavors. Her current work was a historical novel set in 16th-century France during the peak of the Hugenots' persecutions.

The female characters in her works were most often spirited nonconformists who did not bow to the stereotype of women's conduct and behavior of the times. In fact, she was one Edgar Allan Poe's favorite authors and he was known to had referred to her current book as the best novel written by an American female novelist. 'The Linwoods' was a historical romance set during the American Revolution. Quite uncommon.
