He was also active in politics, supporting the Peasant's Party in 1870s and advocating for a language reform through elimination of foreign words. The original first edition of 'Roman Days' was published in 1877 after Rydberg's prolonged visit to Italy. The book encompassed series of essays on Italian culture, archaeology, and history with chapters on Peter and Paul, antique statues, the Roman emperors, etc.
