Signed/inscribed by author. Popov was an active member of the Communist Party until 1990. In the 1970s he was dean of the Economics Faculty of Moscow Lomonosov University. After that, he quit the Party and became a staunch proponent of democratization. He was the first democratically elected mayor of Moscow. He resigned in 1992.

Sergei Bondarin was a Russian novelist who, in 1944, was arrested and sent to a labor camp on charges of "anti-Soviet agitation." He spent 9 years at the camp and then went in exile in the Krasnoyarsk Territory of Siberia. Some of the notes and novellas in his Touching the Person are autobiographical in nature.
