Description:
Wroclaw: Ossolineum, 1988. Hardcover. First edition, 1 of 4000 copies; 7 3/4 x 5 1/4; pp. 238; cloth-backed, illustrated paper over boards; small rubbed spot to front board and minor wear to corners; illustrated with facsimiles; very good to about near fine condition. Adam Jerzy Poltawski (1881 - 1952) was a Polish graphic artist, printer, illustrator and type designer. He ran his own printing shop and designed many of the most popular fonts, widely used by Polish printing houses in the first half of the 20th century. He was the creator of the first, truly original, Polish typeface - Antykwa Poltawskiego - in 1928. It was initially cast in 1931 at the Idzkowski foundry in Warsaw and it would also be cast for hot setting by the Monotype Corporation, being the only Polish export typeface.

Description:
Riga: Liesma, 1988. Hardcover. First Russian edition, translated from Latvian; 8 x 5; pp. 226; glossy pictorial paper over boards; small bumps to corners and mild age-toning; illustrated with a map and facsimile title pages; very good or better. The book, 1 of 10 000 copies, was published in honor of the 400-anniversary of printing and publishing in Latvia (1588-1988) and covered the period from the very beginning until 1917. Though, other sources point to the anniversary having been in 1985, rather than 1988, as a book discovered at the library of the University of Uppsala, the "Katolu katechisms" (Catholic Catechism), was dated 1585 and has been, in recent years, considered the oldest book published in Latvian. Regardless, the current work reveals the fascinating history of Latvia's books, authors, and publishers.
