Profusely illustrated by Evgenii Charushin - an acclaimed Russian artist and a prolific children's books illustrator. The author, Samuil Marshak, was proclaimed by Maxim Gorky to be "the founder of Russia's children's literature." He was also a talented translator among whose beautiful translations were those of Shakespeare, Robert Burns, and Rudyard Kipling.

Full-page color frontis; full-page b & w illustrations throughout; lettrines at beginning of each chapter. A charming compilation of old tales, translated from the original French. What makes the book that much more interesting is the beautiful art in it by Dmitrii Isidorovich Mitrokhin - a brilliant and well-known Russian artist and illustrator.

Jacket with a few small nicks to head and tail of spine and corners, very good. What first grabs the attention in this book are the striking full-page sepia tone illustrations by Olga Paskaleva - an award winning Bulgarian artist. In a typical Communist propaganda way, the poem commemorates the heroism of 7 members of 'Georgi Benkovski' Partisan Squad during WWII. Surrounded and far outnumbered by the Germans In the winter of 1944, they run out of ammunition and instead of falling into the enemy's hands they save the last bomb for themselves.

A beautiful children's edition of William Thackeray's 'The Rose and the Ring,' in which he subtly criticizes the monarchy and the twisted views of beauty of the nobility.

Nekrasov was one of the foremost figures in Russia's liberal and radical circles of the Russian intelligentsia in the second half of the 19th century. Alexsei Pakhomov was one of the biggest names of Russian avant garde in the early to mid-1900s.
