Single volume (170 x 115 mm), pp. vi, 269, [11 pp. adverts.], gift inscription to front endpaper in near-contemporary ink. Bound in original publisher's yellow cloth stamped in black and gold. Toned with scattered foxing, dust soiling, extremities worn. Good to very good. First edition, included in the "Famous Women" series of biographies by Roberts Bros. of Boston published between 1883 and 1884. Elizabeth Gurney Fry (1780-1845) was an English social reformer and advocate for female prisoners, and was largely responsible for the Gaols Act of 1823. The Act protected imprisoned females from sexual assault, and mandated prisons be segregated by gender. This copy bears a sweet gift inscription to "Ida" dated January 1886. Stock ref. 1834
